Auto body fillers are used for repair works to remove dents and scratches as well as large corroded areas. The filling is one of the initial stages of preparing car body for painting.

What are the types of auto body fillers

By form:

  • Single-component. Supplied as a ready-to-use product.
  • Double-component. Are mixed before they are used. Cannot be stored for a long time after they made, usually for several minutes.

By intended purpose:

  • For metal. Have an excellent adhesion. Fillers also differ in the ingredients they contain:
    • Glass fibre. These materials are characterised by high durability and excellent reinforcing properties. Can be applied in a thick layer. Intended for smoothing significantly deformed areas and removing of large corrosion spots on door sills, pillars, arches and other body parts. Unsuitable for parts exposed to vibration.
    • Aluminium particles. These products are flexible and durable. Suitable for repairing a roof, luggage compartment and bonnet. They are highly resistant to vibration and can withstand numerous cycles of thermal expansion which makes them ideal for use in the engine compartment.
    • Hollow glass elements. These components do not affect the weight of the treated spare parts. Suitable for smoothing large parts. Easy to polish.
  • For plastic. Fill the cracks and scratches on plastic and fibreglass surfaces. Characterised by flexibility and resistance to vibrations and cracking.

Depending on the size of particles:

  • Coarse. Are used at the initial stages of work to fill large chips, dents and cracks. After they have dried, the coating is uneven, therefore they need further smoothing.
  • Medium. They can be used to remove both small and large defects. The coating is inferior to one of fine fillers and often need polishing.
  • Fine. Used to make a perfectly smooth surface. Can be applied right on a metal part or polished paintwork as well as on coarse and medium filler.

Tips for using auto body fillers

  1. Make sure that the filler can be used together with the material you’re going to work with.
  2. Prepare the surface considering the type of the product you’re using. Clean, degrease and polish it with sandpaper, if necessary.
  3. It is recommended that all works should be done at the temperature 20–25 °C as it is the most suitable for drying. Detailed information about how to apply the filler can be found in the manufacturer's instructions.
  4. Hold the putty knife at an angle of 30–60 ° when spreading paste-like compounds. To apply liquid chemicals to the body, use a spray gun.
