Wheel cleaners help to remove fast and easily even the most stubborn stains, for example, bitumen and brake pad wear products. They make the parts shiny, protect them from corrosion.

Types of wheel cleaners

Depending on the active ingredient:

  • Acidic. Most often such cleaners are based on phosphoric or hydrochloric acid. They are highly potent and efficient at removing non-organic impurities. These products can be used only on the surfaces resistant to the acidic environment. They are suitable for treating steel parts and incompatible with aluminium elements. Acidic cleaners do not produce any effect on paintwork.
  • Alkali. Such cleaners usually contain sodium hydroxide. They remove oil stains well. Alkali cleaners can be used to clean steel, magnesium and aluminium parts as well as painted and lacquered components.
  • Neutral. They are based on surfactants which do not have any destructive impact on the paintwork. Such products are suitable for almost all wheels including chromed. Neutral cleaners are perfect for removing brake dust. As a rule, they are sold at higher price than acid- or alkali-based products.

Tips on using wheel cleaners

  1. Before commencing read the manufacturer’s instruction. Some products are ready to be used. Others need to be diluted with water first.
  2. Check the product mixing ratios: the same concentrate can be diluted in different proportions depending on type of surface and degree of impurity. These factors affect the time of application as well.
  3. Protect your hand skin, airways and eyes with gloves, respirator and goggles. Most products contain toxic ingredients.
  4. Use a sprayer to spread the chemical evenly and apply it on hard-to-reach places.
  5. Do not spray automotive chemicals on hot surfaces. Do not let them dry completely. When it is warm, try to do all works in shade.
  6. Test the product on an inconspicuous spot before you start cleaning. Thus you’ll make sure it is safe for the material you’re going to treat.
  7. Use a brush or a special sponge to remove stubborn stains.
  8. N.B.: some wheel cleaners should be used only in maintenance shops.
