Are the brake calipers all the same for Audi vehicles?
No. Depending on the model and model version of the vehicle, different types of callipers can be installed:
- Floating calipers. These are installed on most vehicles. They usually have one or two pistons. The pistons press the brake pads alternately: first on the one side and then on the other. They are compact and inexpensive, but they overheat when subjected to heavy loads. They are more susceptible to malfunctions because of the moving guide pins.
- Fixed calipers. These multi-piston components are highly efficient and lightweight. The pads are pressed on both sides simultaneously, providing instant braking. However, they are also quite expensive.
Caliper materials:
- Cast iron. Easy to repair but heavy and prone to corrosion.
- Aluminium. Lightweight and resistant to corrosion.
Both new and reconditioned components are available. Used components are much cheaper and are not inferior in terms of quality and reliability.
Do the brake calipers have to be replaced as a set?
Only the faulty parts need to be replaced. However, after installing a new calliper, it is advisable to install new brake pads on both wheels of the axle.
Are the brake calipers on Audi vehicles repairable?
For most cases, parts can be restored using a repair kit. To do this, the calipers have to be removed, disassembled and treated with a brake cleaner. You will then need to remove the traces of corrosion and wash and dry the components. After that, new pistons and guide pins first need to be lubricated and then installed along with new seals and boots.
If the damage is too severe, the components cannot be restored.
Why do brake calipers fail?
The most common problem is jammed pistons and guides. This usually occurs when moisture and dirt get into the mechanism as a result of boot or seal damage. Using the wrong lubricants can also reduce the service life of the calipers.
