Are the front and rear brake calipers the same in a Kia?

No. The components differ in the following ways:

• Piston diameter. This is larger in the front calipers because of the load redistribution during braking.
• Presence of an integrated parking brake. This is the case for rear components.

The thickness of the brake discs should also be taken into consideration. It is greater in front-mounted, ventilated components.

How do I know when the brake calipers in my Kia need to be replaced?

• Look out for indirect symptoms of malfunctions. The vehicle deviating from its trajectory, increased fuel consumption, a burning smell when braking, decreased level of brake fluid in the reservoir, or changed brake pedal travel may indicate component failure.
• Lift the vehicle and spin the wheel you want to test the mechanism on. If it doesn’t spin smoothly, this may indicate a jammed piston or guide pins.
• After driving, use an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature of the brake discs. Excessive heating of only one of them indicates incomplete release of the mechanism.
• Assess the amount of pad wear. If the inner pad is worn out more than the outer one, the piston is most likely not returning to its initial position.
• Remove the wheels and inspect the components. Drips of working fluid and abundant dirt on the caliper cylinders and the hoses indicates depressurisation.
• Inspect the boots and seals. They must be elastic and intact.

For more thorough diagnostics, the components must be removed and the mobility of all elements manually checked.

Can I install brake calipers in my Kia myself?

Yes, if you have the necessary skills and have done similar work before. The replacement process involves removing the wheel, pads, any sensors, and disconnecting the brake lines. Before reassembly, all removed items should be cleaned and, if necessary, lubricated. After you’ve carried out the job, you have to bleed the system.
