SKODA Brake calipers: find out more! How to choose, when to change , and how much they cost
Why do brake calipers fail?
- Damaged boots. As a result, the guide pins can get dirty, scratches and scuff marks can appear on the piston and cylinder. This may cause the device to jam.
- Increased humidity. Frequent exposure to water causes the housing to corrode.
- Worn brake discs and pads. This reduces the service life of components and can cause them to jam.
- Using the wrong lubricants. This can cause condensation and may subsequently lead to corrosion.
- Insufficient lubrication. If the components are not properly lubricated, they will be worn down faster.
Can I replace the brake calipers on my Skoda myself?
Yes. You will need a jack or a car lift, a hose for bleeding the system, a set of combination spanners, and a torque wrench.
The general procedure is as follows:
- Loosen the wheel fasteners.
- Raise the vehicle and secure it in place.
- Remove the wheel.
- Detach the brake hose and clamp it.
- Remove the protective caps and fasteners.
- Pry the brake pads apart and remove the spring that holds them in place, then remove the caliper itself.
- Install a new component in reverse order.
- Connect the flexible air pump tube to the bleeder fitting and open it to bleed the system.
- Press the brake pedal several times, and then close the fitting.
Tighten all fasteners according to the torque specified by the manufacturer. After you have completed this procedure, check the brake fluid level in the expansion tank.
How can I extend the service life of the brake calipers on my Skoda?
Inspect them every 10,000–15,000 km. If there are any minor defects, use a repair kit. Make sure to lubricate the guide pins with a special lubricant.
Should I bleed the brake system after replacing my brake calipers?
After replacing the parts, remove the air from the system according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. You may need an assistant to help you with this.
