What are the main causes of premature brake pad wear?
- Overheating. This can occur when you regularly drive on winding roads or as a result of frequent emergency braking.
- Jammed calipers. Results in a loss of contact between the brake pads and disc surface.
- Contaminants and dirt. A build up of dirt can stop the components from moving properly and lead to damage.
- Pipe leaks. Leaked fluids can make the components greasy.
What types of brake pads are available for Suzuki vehicles?
Intended use:
- Standard pads. Usually made from organic or low-metallic materials. They are installed on small and medium-sized vehicles. The components are quiet and inexpensive but prone to abrasive wear and damage when exposed to high temperatures.
- Brake pads for high-speed driving. These are ceramic components. They are silent, heat-resistant, and they don’t produce much dust. This type of pad is long-lasting but slightly more expensive. They are immediately effective when braking and work just as efficiently when they are exposed to extreme heat.
- High performance pads for heavy vehicles or sports cars. They are typically composed of a high concentration of metal fibres and are therefore highly conductive and resistant to overheating. The components are able to withstand high loads and are inexpensive. However, they are quite noisy and produce a lot of dust.
Design:
- Symmetrical pads. They have a flat surface and press against the disc at right angles. However, the forces generated by the rotation of the disc can move the pads out place, causing them to be uneven. This causes them to wear more rapidly and make a lot of noise when braking.
- Directional pads. Some of these components have a chamfered lining, others feature a crescent-shaped hole in the shim which ensures that the pad presses against the disc at an angle. This enhanced design ensures that the pressure is evenly distributed, reduces the noise, and prevents uneven wear.
The components vary in size and shape, and there are different methods of attachment for different products. To avoid choosing the wrong product, always use the VIN.
Do I have to install new brake pads on my Suzuki after replacing the brake discs?
Yes. This is to ensure that the pads and the discs line up evenly.
