An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve is an element which redirects a portion of exhaust gases to the intake manifold. This technology allows reducing toxic emissions and helps to warm up the intake manifold quicker, which is useful at low ambient temperatures.
Types
Depending on the type of regulation, EGR valves are divided into:
- Pneumatic. They are reliable and have a simple design, however, they are almost obsolete nowadays. They are actuated by exhaust backpressure.
- Electronic vacuum valves. They are controlled by a remote vacuum regulator, which transmits corresponding signals to the unit throttle.
- Digital. They are actuated by an electromagnet, a DC electric motor or stepper motor. This is the most advanced valve type. Such devices allow tailoring the recirculation system operation exactly to the power unit operating modes.
Apart from this, the components sometimes feature additional elements, for instance, a positioning sensor, which allows adjusting the recirculation process more accurately, as well as the exhaust gases cooling module.
Operating tips
Incorrect fuel-and-air mixture directly affects the working lifespan of the component. If the mixture is too rich or too poor, the fuel will keep burning in the exhaust system, and this may damage the EGR valve. To avoid this, you need to replace the air filter in due time and make sure the fuel injectors are not clogged and are operable. It is also important to ensure the correct operation of the ignition system.
Inspect and tighten the timing belt regularly. A loose belt may lead to incorrect valve timing and forming too rich mixture.
Use additives with caution. They may contain foreign materials which are detrimental for the elements of the engine and exhaust system. For the same reason, use only high-quality petrol.
Avoid short-distance trips if possible. If your car has high mileage, consider replacing the piston rings and valve oil seals. Make sure the crankcase ventilation system operates correctly.
Symptoms of malfunctions
Rough idling is one reason to suspect that the EGR valve has burned through or is stuck open. In some cases, the engine will even stall at idle. Depending on the engine design, the fuel-and-air mixture will be either too rich or too poor. Also, the vehicle might become jerky during acceleration. Ignoring the problem may result in soot deposition on the intake valves and spark plug insulators. It is harder to notice when the valve is stuck closed. Indirect signs of this malfunction are increased fuel consumption, engine knocking and overheating, poor turbocharger performance (if the vehicle has it).
Causes of malfunctions
Sticking in the closed or open position is mostly caused by carbon deposition on the part’s surface. Deposits form due to the use of poor-quality fuel and ingress of oil into the combustion chambers. In case of incorrect formation of the fuel-and-air mixture, fuel keeps burning in the exhaust manifold. This may cause the EGR valve to burn through.
