What can affect the window regulators on VW vehicles?
- Moisture. If it gets into the mechanism it can cause the electric motor to fail temporarily. If this occurs, clean its electrical terminals and treat them with a special spray. In addition, if the window seals get wet, it prevents the windows from moving freely. Therefore, the rubber components should be lubricated every so often with a suitable lubricant, e.g. a silicone-based one.
- Low ambient temperatures. In frosty weather, the moisture inside the door or on the window freezes, causing the mechanism to jam. It usually starts working again after the inside of the vehicle has warmed up. To prevent further problems, check the elasticity of the seals and whether they are pressed firmly against the glass. Also, make sure that the drain holes in the door are not clogged.
- Incorrect settings. Devices with the automatic closing, one-touch, and anti-pinch functions often need to be initialised after they are installed or repaired.
- Insufficient lubrication. This may stop the glass from moving properly along the guide rails. It is advisable to disassemble the device and treat it with a special lubricant.
Do all VWs have power windows?
No. Some vehicles are fitted with manual devices:
- Vehicles manufactured before 1997.
- Standard trim level cars manufactured more recently.
- Commercial vehicles, including modern ones.
Mechanical devices installed as standard can be replaced with electric ones. However, this should be done by a qualified mechanic at a car workshop, as it involves connecting the equipment to the vehicle’s onboard power supply.
Are the different types of window regulators equally difficult to replace?
It depends on the component that needs to be replaced. Replacing and installing the components of a mechanical device is usually quite forward. However, new wires may need to be installed for power windows, which requires more effort and time.
Can I just install one new window regulator in the VW?
Yes, as long as the other ones are working properly.
