The Exhaust system is designed to collect and vent exhaust gases away from the engine cylinders into the atmosphere and preventing them from getting into the car interior. This system suppresses noises when exhaust fumes come out. It also serves to lower the toxicity of emissions.
Design of the exhaust system
The exhaust system of modern vehicles usually consists of the following components:
- Exhaust manifold. This is attached to the engine. The number of primary pipes of the exhaust manifold coincides with a number of cylinders the engine has. This component collects exhaust gases into the downpipe. It ensures the scavenging of the motor combustion chambers. The joint between these units is sealed with a gasket.
- Downpipe. It connects the exhaust manifold with a catalytic converter or resonator. It is used for further transport of the exhaust gases. Its design often comprises a flex pipe, a special elastic compensator that balances temperature fluctuations and vibrations produced by the engine.
- Catalytic converter. Harmful substances in exhaust gases react with the coating of the catalytic converter’s elements and turn into harmless compounds. Catalytic converters help to significantly reduce the toxicity of emissions.
- Particulate filter. This is designed to purify exhaust gasses but only in diesel engines.
- Resonator or pre-silencer. This is used to reduce the noise level and balance the pulsation of the exhaust gas flow.
- Main or end silencer. It ensures final noise suppression.
- Connectors, seals, and gaskets. All components of the exhaust system are connected to each other via pipeline. Their joints can be sealed with gaskets.
- Mounts. The exhaust system is attached to the car’s underbody by special rubber-metal hangers with clamps. These mounts prevent vibrations from being transferred to the car body.
Maintenance tips
- Fix engine malfunctions on time. Delayed ignition, misfiring, and a rich air-fuel mixture result in fuel burning up in the exhaust system, thus causing its elements to burn through. For the same reason, using poor-quality petrol is not recommended either.
- Let the engine run at high RPM from time to time. This will remove oxides and soot deposits from the silencer’s elements.
- Do not use the remote engine start function too often in winter. The number of heating and cooling cycles affects the service life of the components.
- Avoid puddles when driving on poor roads. A sudden temperature change may cause the components to crack.
- Tighten silencer mounts in a timely fashion. Excessive vibrations negatively affect other components.
Signs of malfunction
Burnt silencers, seals worn out by corrosion, and other malfunctions are often accompanied by loud noises from the running engine. Standing outside, you may notice exhaust gases coming from under the bonnet or below the vehicle. Sometimes these will enter the interior of the car. Bad smells when starting a cold engine may mean your catalytic converter is clogged. This problem often goes hand in hand with reduced vehicle performance, increased oil and fuel consumption, and difficulties when starting the engine. Metallic sounds coming from under the vehicle while driving can be a sign of a faulty silencer hanger.
Causes of malfunction
The operation of the silencer leads to the formation of condensate inside of its elements. This can cause the parts to corrode. Therefore, when replacing the components of the exhaust system, opt for ones made of corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel. Frequent short-distance driving causes carbon and soot deposits on the system’s elements and may result in the system becoming clogged.
