MAF sensor for cars: find out more! How to choose, when to change , and how much they cost
A mass airflow sensor is a sensor that measures the amount of air entering the intake manifold. Its readings are used by the engine control unit. It needs them to set up and maintain the correct air-fuel ratio. Moreover, in petrol engines, the sensor helps to adjust the injection and ignition timing, amount of fuel supplied, and it is responsible for the operation of the evaporative emissions system. In diesel engines, it controls the injection timing and the exhaust gas recirculation system function.
Types
By the operating principle:
- Mechanical (moving vane meters). They determine the amount of intake air, which is proportional to the travel of a spring-loaded vane. An intake air temperature sensor is used to adjust the data, as the mass airflow sensor readings are temperature-dependent. Such sensors are mostly installed on older vehicles.
- Thermal (hot-wire and membrane sensors). These sensors determine the air mass using the temperature changes of a sensitive element. They are more accurate and reliable as there are no moving parts. Their readings are not affected by environmental temperature. They use a wire or a special crystal coated with platinum layers as the working element. The latter type, also known as membrane sensors, are the most advanced and efficient, as they are resistant to soiling and keep accurate measurements throughout their service life.
Operating tips
Before installing a new mass airflow sensor, inspect the intake manifold carefully: traces of oil on it can indicate malfunctions of the crankcase ventilation system or that there is too much oil in the lubrication system. The new component will break down prematurely if you don’t address these issues. You need to check and, if necessary, replace the air filter for the same reason. Make sure to install it properly.
Before installing the new part, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery to avoid any type of activation. Always use components that meet your vehicle’s specifications.
Symptoms of malfunctions
Dirt on the housing or sensitive element leads to inaccurate readings. Oxidised or torn contacts also cause malfunctions of the mass airflow sensor. “Check Engine” warning light may come on on the dashboard. Fuel consumption increases significantly. The engine revs up slowly. In some cases, the power unit is even hard to start. The engine may stall and the idling is rough. Dense black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe may also indicate that the component is faulty.
Causes of malfunctions
If the air filter is installed incorrectly, uncleaned air will enter the intake. This leads to soiling of the sensitive element of the mass airflow sensor. The same thing may occur when the filter itself is of poor quality and got torn. Oil entering the intake will also cause soiling of the sensitive element. Water coming into the intake system can cause a short circuit in the sensor contacts. Installation errors often cause mechanical damage to the part.
