Control arm for cars: find out more! How to choose, when to change , and how much they cost
Arms are elements of the vehicle independent suspension. They serve to restrict vertical movement of the wheel.
Types of suspension armsAccording to the direction of travel:
- longitudinal;
- lateral.
By design:
- triangular;
- straight with two attachment points;
- H-shaped.
The arms are molded parts with reinforcement ribs of steel or light alloy. Components have thickenings on both ends, and one of them is cylindrical in shape with a pressed-in silentblock and the other is ring-shaped, for fixing the bushing. Arm shapes can be modified depending on design solutions.
Operation of suspension armsWith proper and careful operation suspension arms will last for the entire life of the car. Items can be damaged due to the deformation or corrosion. Driving on roads with high-quality surfaces, neat riding and proper storage of the car will increase the lifespan of this component type.

FAQ and people ask: Suspension arm
The component replacement process depends on a suspension construction. It can differ significantly in cars of various brands, models and versions. The basic algorithm is the following:
- Studying the vehicle workshop manual.
- Preparing tools. In most cases, you will need a car lift, wheel chocks, bush removers, screwdrivers, WD-40 spray, open and box spanners, a torque wrench and a wheel brace.
- Accessing the fasteners of the part. For this, you will need to remove the wheels and other elements.
- Removing the fasteners and disassembling the component.
- Cleaning the contacting parts and their mounting seats.
- Installing a new part. For tightening threaded joints, always use a torque wrench for applying the torque recommended by the car manufacturer.
- Aligning wheel angles
All suspension arms can be divided into three groups according to their price:
- Low-cost products. The group includes the products of Ridex, NK, SWAG, Mapco, JP Group and some other brands. They are inexpensive. The parts are designed to handle medium loads. On the average, their service life lasts for about 40,000 kilometres. You can choose them if you drive rarely, prefer high-quality roads, have a calm driving style and rarely carry heavy cargo in your boot.
- Premium products. They include parts made by Monroe, Delphi and Stark Automotive. Their main advantages are excellent quality and long lifespan, which can reach the mileage of 120,000 kilometres. Products of this group are popular among owners of sports cars and off-road vehicles, which encounter heavy loads.
- Mid-quality products. It is an optimal choice for many cars, as it combines reliability and affordable price. In case of a relatively calm driving style, these parts withstand everyday usage duly. They serve for up to 75,000 kilometres. This group is presented by the following brands: Topran, Metzger, CTR, Febi Bilstein, Ruville, Meyle, Diederichs, ABS.
Lift your car with a jack or set it over a servicing pit or onto a ramp. Assess the parts’ condition visually. They should not have deformations, corrosion stains, or shears. Bushes delamination also indicates suspension arms’ poor condition.
Make sure that the fasteners are properly tightened and there is no gap between the bush and the arm. To do this, grab the arm with your hand and try to rock it in different directions. Ball joints free movement can be checked with the help of a pry bar, by putting it between the component and the steering knuckle.
