  4. Conclusion: The best BMW X3 engines of all generations

Since its introduction in 2003, the BMW X3 has developed into one of the most successful premium SUVs and offers a diverse BMW X3 engine range across three generations. Each generation has brought new technologies and different strengths and weaknesses, with technological evolution ranging from classic naturally aspirated engines to modern mild-hybrid systems.

BMW X3 engines: Generation I (2003-2010)

BMW X3 engines: Generation I (2003-2010)

The first BMW X3 generation was a pioneering period for BMW in the premium SUV segment and was characterized by robust, but not yet fully developed engines. Mileage varied greatly depending on the engine type: while the tried-and-tested BMW X3 diesel engines easily reached 350,000 to 450,000 kilometers with proper maintenance, the early petrol engines often required costly repairs to valve cover seals or water pumps between 200,000 and 250,000 kilometers. Major engine damage was rare if maintenance was neglected, but expensive ancillary units made maintenance costly. The absolute top engine of this generation was the 3.0d with 218 hp, which optimally combined power, reliability and, by the standards of the time, acceptable economy.

BMW X3 petrol engines: Generation I (2003-2010)

The BMW X3 petrol engine range mainly comprised naturally aspirated engines without turbocharging. The 2.5i was available as the entry-level engine with 141 kW (192 hp), followed by the more popular 3.0i with 170 kW (231 hp). These BMW X3 engines suffered from typical problems of the early 2000s: leaking valve cover gaskets, faulty water pumps and occasionally problematic vanos systems made them high-maintenance. The BMW X3 3.0si with 200 kW (272 hp) was the most powerful gasoline engine of this generation and proved to be more reliable than its smaller siblings, but had a correspondingly high fuel consumption of over 12 liters per 100 km.

BMW X3 diesel engines: Generation I (2003-2010)

The 2.0d with 110 kW (150 hp) dominated the BMW X3 diesel range as the entry-level engine, but it was often perceived as underpowered. The BMW X3 3.0d with 150 kW (204 hp) developed into the bestseller of the generation - especially the variants produced from 2007 onwards with revised common-rail injection proved to be very durable and economical. The crowning glory was the BMW X3 3.0sd with 210 kW (286 hp), the first BMW diesel engine with bi-turbo charging. These BMW X3 diesel engines already met the Euro 4 standard and offered an excellent combination of performance, consumption and reliability, with only the swirl flaps occasionally causing problems.

BMW X3 engine Power output Fuel consumption Typical weaknesses Rating
2,5i 192 HP 10.5-11.2 l/100km Valve cover gasket, water pump Average
3,0i 231 HP 11.8-12.4 l/100km Vanos system, water pump Good
3.0si 272 HP 12.2-13.1 l/100km High consumption, otherwise robust Good
2,0d 150 HP 7.2-7.8 l/100km Underpowered, swirl flaps Average
3,0d 204-218 HP 7.8-8.4 l/100km Very robust, proven Very good
3.0sd 286 HP 8.6-9.2 l/100km Bi-turbo complex, but powerful Good

BMW X3 engines: Generation II (2010-2017)

BMW X3 engines: Generation II (2010-2017)

The second BMW X3 generation marked a significant technological leap and is considered the most balanced of all three generations. Most engines of this generation can easily reach 300,000 to 400,000 kilometers with proper maintenance, whereby the BMW X3 diesel engines with xDrive are considered to be particularly durable. Major engine failures have become rare, with only the early N20 petrol engines showing weaknesses in the timing chain. The absolute highlight was the BMW X3 M40i with 265 kW (360 hp) - a technical masterpiece with turbocharging that offered both power and efficiency. This generation also introduced BMW X3 TwinPower Turbo technology and set new standards for performance and fuel consumption.

BMW X3 petrol engines: Generation II (2010-2017)

The BMW X3 petrol engine range started with the 2.0i (N20) with 135 kW (184 hp), which, however, suffered from timing chain problems. The BMW X3 2.8i and later 3.0i (N52/N55) with 180-225 kW (245-306 hp) proved to be much more reliable. These BMW X3 engines used the new TwinPower Turbo technology and offered a good balance between performance and consumption. The BMW X3 M40i with 265 kW (360 hp) was the most powerful gasoline engine and became the flagship of this generation - with its B58 engine, considered one of the best BMW engines of all time, it combined 500 Nm of torque with surprisingly moderate fuel consumption of 8.7 liters per 100 km.

BMW X3 diesel engines: Generation II (2010-2017)

The BMW X3 diesel range was dominated by the proven six-cylinder engines. The BMW X3 2.0d with 120-140 kW (163-190 hp) offered solid performance for everyday use, while the BMW X3 3.0d with 190-230 kW (258-313 hp) represented the perfect balance between power and efficiency. All BMW X3 diesels featured modern common-rail injection with particulate filter. The BMW X3 3.0d with 190 kW (258 hp) proved to be the most reliable and efficient engine of this generation, with a test consumption of only 6.2-6.8 liters per 100 km and high reliability - ideal for frequent drivers and trailer operation. The BMW X3 M50d variant with 280 kW (381 hp) and tri-turbo charging was a technical highlight, but correspondingly complex.

BMW X3 engine Power output Fuel consumption Typical weaknesses Rating
2.0i (N20) 184 HP 8.1-8.7 l/100km Timing chain, turbocharger Moderate
2.8i/3.0i 245-306 HP 8.9-9.6 l/100km Water pump, thermostat Good
M40i 360 HP 8.7-9.3 l/100km B58 engine very robust Very good
2,0d 163-190 HP 5.8-6.4 l/100km Solid, but not widely used Good
3,0d 258-313 HP 6.2-6.8 l/100km Very robust and efficient Very good
M50d 381 HP 7.4-8.1 l/100km Tri-Turbo complex Good

BMW X3 engines: Generation III (2017-today)

BMW X3 engines: Generation III (2017-today)

The current BMW X3 generation represents the pinnacle of BMW engine technology and relies entirely on turbocharging and increasingly on electrification. All engines are now equipped with TwinPower Turbo technology, and mild hybrid systems are gradually being introduced. As the generation has only been on the market since 2017, there is no complete long-term experience yet, but the first tests show promising approaches. The top-of-the-range engine is the BMW X3 M Competition with 375 kW (510 hp), which combines sporty performance with astonishing suitability for everyday use. The modern generation of engines promises a service life of over 400,000 kilometers, as the manufacturing quality and materials have been significantly improved.

BMW X3 petrol engines: Generation III (2017-today)

Two four-cylinder engines form the basis of the BMW X3 engine range: the 2.0i with 135 kW (184 hp) and the more powerful 2.0i with 181 kW (245 hp). Both BMW X3 engines are based on the proven B48 engine with TwinPower Turbo technology. The BMW X3 M40i with 265 kW (360 hp) and the new BMW X3 M40d with 280 kW (381 hp) use the excellent B58 engine, which has proven to be particularly reliable. The crowning glory is the BMW X3 M models with the S58 engine: the BMW X3 M with 353 kW (480 hp) and the BMW X3 M Competition with 375 kW (510 hp) - both are regarded as the best BMW X3 engines of all time and offer a perfect balance between performance and durability.

BMW X3 diesel engines: Generation III (2017-today)

The BMW X3 diesel range includes the 2.0d with 140 kW (190 hp) as the entry-level engine and the popular 3.0d with 195 kW (265 hp). The BMW X3 M40d with 280 kW (381 hp) uses a quad-turbo diesel engine and represents the pinnacle of BMW diesel technology. All BMW X3 diesels feature modern AdBlue technology and meet the Euro 6d standard. The BMW X3 3.0d with 195 kW (265 hp) is shaping up to be the best diesel of this generation - it offers smooth power delivery, low fuel consumption of 6.1-6.7 liters per 100 km and has so far been free of major production problems.

BMW X3 hybrid drives: Generation III (2017-today)

From 2020, the BMW X3 xDrive30e was introduced as a plug-in hybrid with 215 kW (292 hp) system output. This combines a 2.0-liter petrol engine with an 83 kW (113 hp) electric motor and offers an electric range of up to 46 km. The BMW X3 Hybrid proves to be reliable, but has limitations in terms of trunk space and higher maintenance costs due to the complex technology.

BMW X3 engine Power output Fuel consumption Typical weaknesses Rating

M/M Competition 480-510 HP 10.1-10.7 l/100km S58 engine very robust Very good
2,0d 190 HP 5.9-6.5 l/100km Solid base Good
3,0d 265 HP 6.1-6.7 l/100km Very robust and efficient Very good
M40d 381 HP 7.2-7.8 l/100km Quad-Turbo complex Good
xDrive30e 292 HP 2.1-2.4 l/100km + electricity Complex technology, small trunk Good
