BMW Z1 is one of the first roadsters of the BMW company. The door opening gear became one of the features of the car. It is the first car in the world which used an unusual design of doors — they moved into a threshold.

The BMW Z1 model was presented in 1987 at the automobile show in Frankfurt, but the press got the first photos of a pilot model in 1986. BMW Z1 cars caused a huge resonance therefore before the beginning of their mass production the concern received more than 5000 preorders.

Ulrich Bez was engaged in the design of this car. After his leaving of the company in 1987 the project was transferred to Claus Faust.

BMW Z1 was constructed on the platform of the BMW 3 model of the E30 series. But it has a significant amount of innovations: xenon headlights, the integrated framework, function of vertical opening of doors and a special structure of a threshold.

After serial release in 1987 interest in the car considerably decreased. In total about 8000 copies were sold, 6500 from which remained in the German automobile market.

Within cooperation of the Alpina and BMW companies the improved version of the BMW Z1 car which came out in the limited series was designed. It received the name Alpina RLE. More powerful engine was installed on this version, the suspender and running system were improved. Designers put additional protection of an exhaust system and the 17-inch cast disks Alpina. In total 66 copies of version were released.

By the beginning of the 1990’s, sales of BMW Z1 fell strongly, and further production became unprofitable. For this reason in 1991 the release of model was stopped.
