Jeep Cherokee
Jeep Cherokee is a full-size ORV produced since 1974. It is currently produced in its fifth generation already. In 2013 the latest generation of Jeep Cherokee received five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests.
Jeep Cherokee 1974–2001
Jeep Cherokee car was designed on the basis of the Jeep Wagoneer model and is its SUV version. The first generation of Jeep Cherokee (SJ) released in 1974 initially was available as a three-door SUV. The five-door model appeared in 1977 only. Cars had capacious passenger compartment, sturdy frame construction and fine roadability, but at the same time high fuel consumption and a rigid suspension. By 1984 about 200 000 Jeeps Cherokee of the first generation were produced at plants in the USA, Argentina and Australia.
Jeep Cherokee of the second generation (XJ) released in 1984 became much more compact than the predecessors: 4199 mm against 4735 mm of length of ORV of the first generation. In the middle of 1985, Jeeps Cherokee with the rear-wheel drive went on sale. It was the first non four-wheel drive Jeep car. Such step was taken for the purpose of engaging buyers who did not need the four wheel drive or did not want to overpay for it. Some Jeep Cherokee cars were released with the right hand steering wheel specifically for post services of the USA. Later this allowed model to appear in the markets of Great Britain, Ireland and Japan.
In 1997 restyling of the second generation of Jeep Cherokee took place. The boot door began to be made of steel instead of fiberglass. The design of back headlights was changed. On each side of the body plastic mouldings were located. Changes concerned the interior of the car also; in particular, the dashboard was completely changed. Production of the second generation was stopped in the middle of 2001.
Jeep Cherokee 2001–2012
In 2001 the presentation of the third generation of Jeep Cherokee (KJ) took place. Now the ORV was released in a five-door body only. For the first time rack steering was used at Jeep cars. Designers softened the rugged lines of Jeep Cherokee body a little and used better materials for interior trimming. In 2005 the ORV had a minor facelift: the shape of bumpers and radiator grille was changed.
The fourth generation of Jeep Cherokee (KK) presented in 2007 in New York had the common platform with Dodge Nitro released the previous year, their exteriors were similar. It was possible to recognize Jeep Cherokee by the signature radiator grille and trapezoid wheel arches. The interior of ORV resembled Dodge Nitro also: the spacious passenger compartment was trimmed with hard plastic.
Jeep Cherokee V generation (KL)
In 2013 at the motor show in New York the fifth generation of Jeep Cherokee was presented. Sales started in November of the same year. The basis of the car was formed by the new Fiat Compact/Compact U.S Wide platform developed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. This affected the shape of the car drastically: the sharp lines of the body, characteristic of the American SUV, were replaced by elegant and smooth lines in style of "biodesign" peculiar to the Italian automotive industry which imitates streamlined shapes of wildlife. The ergonomics of the driver's place impress though the seat lacks side support. Also the high level of noise isolation of passenger compartment should be noted.
Jeep Cherokee in the markets of the different countries
The third and fourth generation of Jeep Cherokee in the USA and Canada was known as Jeep Liberty.
