Mercedes-Benz A class cars are produced since 1997 till present. Today three generations and two restylings of the car are presented. Cars of the first generation are assembled in Germany, Brazil and Thailand; the second generation— in Germany and Thailand. The third generation is assembled in Germany, Hungary, Finland, and also Mexico.

The debut of Mercedes-Benz A class took place at the Geneva auto show in March, 1997. Production of the first generation continued till 2000. Cars were released in a body of a five-door hatchback. The car differed from other representatives of a model range of the German producer in the compact sizes and the front-wheel drive. The concept of Mercedes-Benz NAFA formed base for Mercedes-Benz A class creation. In a novelty producers realized an innovation — a double Sandwich floor that allowed to increase safety of the car.

In 2000 there was a restyling of Mercedes-Benz A class of the first generation. Changes affected front part of the body: the bumper shape was changed, the lighting was updated. As a result of restyling, headlights were covered by glasses made of polycarbonate. Also the central console was replaced; front seats and wheel shape were changed. In several months, modification of Mercedes-Benz A class A160 L with wheel base, extended by 17 cm, was presented.

Release of the second generation continued from 2004 to 2008. At model designing, producers paid a bigger attention to the safety. The second generation of the car got additional airbags, driver's and front passengers’ seats were equipped with active head restraints.

Loading capacity of the Mercedes-Benz A was 15% more, than its predecessor had. The Automatic Slip Regulation system (ASR), and Electronic Sstability Programme (ESC) and anti-lock braking system (ABS) were included in a basic package. In the range of the second generation models, the body of a three-door hatchback was added.

In 2008 there was a restyling of the second generation. The updated car was presented at the auto show in Leipzig. As a result of modernization, the bumper shape was slightly changed, air inlets and door mirrors were enlarged, the design of the radiator grille was updated. Tail lights also had a new design. Changes concerned an interior and hardware also.

In 2012 releasing of the third generation took place. The updated car debuted at the Geneva motor show. Design of the model considerably differs from Mercedes-Benz A class of the previous generations. The car was constructed on the modular MFA platform. Today cars are released in a body of a five-door hatchback in three packages — Urban, Style and AMG Sport.
