Mercedes-Benz M-class is a crossover released from 1997 to nowadays. Initially it was manufactured in Vance, the State of Alabama, the USA. Since 1999 the model also began to be produced in Graz, Austria. Three generations and two restylings of the car are presented at the moment.

It was initially supposed that Mercedes-Benz M-class model will gradually replace already existing Mercedes-Benz G-class which at the time of creation of the new model has been released for 11 years. Development of the crossover began in 1993. The design and technical capabilities of a prototype were improved repeatedly that considerably removed start of stock production.

The stock car was produced since 1997 and was created on the base of Mercedes-Benz G-class. All modifications of the car had the four-wheel drive system 4Matic, with an engine torque transferred immediately to each wheel by means of independent differentials. Also all packages had 4-ETS system which was tested on this model for the first time.

In 1998 the model was entitled "The crossover of year" at the North American automobile show. In 1999 the car also won the prize "World Car Award" according to automobile journalists in Geneva.

In 2002 there was a restyling of the car of the first generation. Cars had new front and back optics, direction indicators, the changed front bumper and 17-inch cast disks integrated into side mirrors. Also quality of materials of inner trimming was improved.

The updated Mercedes-Benz M-class W164 model was presented at the North American automobile festival in 2005. The exterior of the car was remade almost completely — it became sportier. Aerodynamic indexes were improved considerably.

Mercedes-Benz M-class of the second generation was entitled "The best sports crossover" in the rating of "Canadian Car of the Year" in 2006. This crossover was considered as the most powerful.

In 2008 developers considerably elaborated interior design of a car. Besides, the shape of front headlights, both bumpers, rear-view mirrors was changed a little. Also designers enlarged a radiator grille.

After the considerable technical elaborations the company presented the third generation of Mercedes-Benz M-class cars in 2011. Designers modernized the transmission and engines for larger economy of fuel. Besides, cruise control systems, driving assistant and roll stabilizer were installed. It allowed to achieve the best controllability and stability of the car even in the off road conditions.

Mercedes-Benz M-class of the third generation received the first place in the rating of "Luxury Crossover SUV" and was called the ideal vehicle for Americans by results of AutoPacific consulting firm poll.
