History of Porsche 924 creation
The car was developed by the Volkswagen Company to replace the VW Porsche 914 model. In the early seventies, the concern abandoned production of the car because of a difficult economic situation in the conditions of oil crisis. In 1976 the car went on sale under the name of Porsche. The car was released in a coupe body only.
Porsche 924 differed from earlier models of the company in a frontal engine location and the transmission located at the rear part of the car according to the Transaxle scheme. The car was equipped with the power unit from Audi 100 with liquid cooling, atypical for models of the company. Modifications with atmospheric and turbocharged engines were produced.
Distribution of weight on axles of Porsche 924 was almost ideal. The car had the front spring suspension with telescopic dampers and the rear multilever suspension with torsions. Disc brakes were installed only on the front wheels of Porsche 924, and rear ones were equipped with brakes of drum type. Only at Porsche 924 S modification rear wheels were also equipped with disc brakes.
To improve the aerodynamic characteristic, Porsche 924 had pop-up headlights. The car had drag coefficient of 0,34. Direction indicators are built in the front bumper of the car, and above the bumper there was a wide air inlet. The sloping wide rear window smoothly continued the line of the roof.
On the front panel analogue clock and the indicator of brake shoes wearing were located in addition to the main devices. The car interior was designed to seat four people. Front seats of Porsche 924 had the elaborated lateral supports and provided the high level of comfort. Rear seats were less comfortable for adults because of the low roof and the slanted rear end.
The trunk volume of Porsche 924 made 370 litres. Backs of rear seats could be folded down if necessary for increase in volume of baggage compartment. As additional options the car was equipped with fog lights, headlight washers, a hatch and a rear window wiper.
Porsche 924 cars were widely used in motorsport and shown good results in “24 Heures du Mans” race. Production of the model was stopped in 1988. A considerable number of Porsche 924 cars remained in good conditions thanks to a galvanized body.
