Porsche 928
Porsche 928 cars were produced from 1977 to 1995 at the plant in Stuttgart, Germany. In 1978 the model was entitled "The European car of year", becoming the only sports car which had this title.
History of Porsche 928 creation
Development of the model began in 1971, but production of the car was postponed because of oil crisis. In 1977 at the motor show in Geneva the company presented the Porsche 928 stock model. Wolfgang Möbius was engaged in creation of the body. The car was released in a three-door coupe body.
To reduce the car weight, the bonnet cover, doors and front wings were made of aluminium. The body of Porsche 928 was made of zinc-galvanized steel. The engine was located in the front part of the car, and the car had rear-wheel drive. For ensuring optimum load on axles (50:50) designers arranged transmission at the rear end according to the Transaxle scheme.
The car had unique independent Weissach rear suspension which provided ideal controllability. The car was equipped with round pop-up headlights of an original design. On the front bumper of Porsche 928 additional optics were located. Front and back bumpers were integrated into the car body.
Porsche 928 cars had high-quality noise isolation. The passenger compartment was designed for four seats, including driver's one. Comfort level of rear seats of the model was much higher than in the previous sporty coupes of the company. The trunk volume of Porsche 928 equaled only 178 litres, but it could be increased up to 580 litres by folding rear seats.
The standard package of Porsche 928 included hydraulic power steering, power windows, an adjustable steering column and cruise control. As an additional option, the car was equipped with the air conditioner.
Since 1979 electric drives of the hatch and seats were added to a basic package, and in 1981 the car got a fuel consumption indicator. In 1984 for the first time in history the company equipped Porsche 928 with anti-lock brake system (ABS).
In 1995 production of Porsche 928 was stopped as the car could not compete with the new BMW and Mercedes-Benz models any more.
