Porsche 944
Production of the sports Porsche 944 model was carried out during the period from 1981 to 1991 at the plant in Neckarsulm, Germany. In total, one generation of the car and a set of special modifications in a small number or single copies were released.
History of Porsche 944 creation
The model was created within cooperation of Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche concerns. The car went on sale in 1981. The car was developed on the basis of Porsche 924.
Harm Lagaay directed creation of design of the car. Initially the car was released in a coupe body, but since 1989 cabriolet went on sale.
The new car inherited from Porsche 924 model front engine configuration and arrangement of transmission in the tail of the body according to the Transaxle layout. The car had ideal distribution of weight on axles.
Front and back wheels of Porsche 924 were equipped with ventilated disc brakes. The car successfully combined high dynamic characteristics and a practicality necessary for daily use.
When designing this model the company paid much attention to aerodynamics. Designers managed to reduce the car’s drag coefficient from 0.35 to 0.33.
Porsche 944 cars were equipped with pop-up headlights. Additional elements of front optics were integrated into the front bumper. Below, a wide radiator grille was placed. Between front and back wheel arches there was a thin moulding.
Rear window was a continuation of the roofline of the car. The spoiler was placed at the bottom of the rear window. The rear optics consisted of two wide rectangular blocks; each of them had six separate elements.
The passenger compartment of the car was designed to seat a driver and three passengers.
Back seats were too cramped for adults and were intended for children. Folding backs of the back row of seats allowed to increase the volume of the luggage compartment if necessary. Inner trimming was made of genuine leather.
Since 1984 the car was equipped with hydraulic power steering as an extra option, but the following year the producer added it to a basic package of Porsche 944.
In 1987 there was a possibility to equip the car by anti-lock braking system (ABS) at extra payment, and since 1990 ABS was included in standard package of all modifications of the car. In 1991 production of the model was stopped.
