The production of Volvo XC90 crossovers started in 2002 and continues till present. Two generations and a restyling of the model are presented now. The assembly lines are located in Sweden, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and China.

Volvo XC90 I crossover debuted in 2002 at the Detroit Auto Show. The design of the car drew on The Volvo ACC concept car, presented in Detroit the year before. The exterior of Volvo XC 90 was stylish and smart. Impressive power bulge visually lifted the front part of the hood, that made the car look fancy and elegant. Plastic bumper covers and wheel arches matched black moldings perfectly.

The passenger compartment was spacious and comfortable. Rear-row middle seat could be transformed into a child seat or table. All rear seats had lengthways adjustment and folding backs. Driver and front passenger’s seats were also height-adjustable. The seats had leather trim while the dashboard and steering wheel were decorated with wood insets.

Volvo XC90 distinguished with high safety rates. Car’s basic package included electronic (DSTC) and roll stability control systems (RSC), front and side safety air bags, etc. The first-generation cars were being released till 2006.

In 2006 first-generation Volvo XC90 underwent a restyling. The car got chrome radiator grille. Moldings, wheel arch linings and outside mirror housings were dyed in a main body color. The front bumper was renewed. Slight changes touched the interior.

The second generation of Volvo XC90 was presented at the Paris Motor Show in October, 2014. The vehicle was built on a completely new SPA platform, which took five and a half years for developers to design. These cars had a little in common with the first-generation vehicles.

The design of Volvo XC90 II was created under the leadership of company’s new designer Thomas Ingenlath. The narrow headlights with T-shape LED insets, large radiator grille, bumper and new brand logo made the exterior look respectable. High-quality materials were used for the trim: natural leather, insets of Swedish birch, decorative metal elements. The most expensive package had a gear lever made of crystal glass. Climate control with independent control for third-row passengers, head-up display, 360° camera, Wi-Fi access point were available as additional options.

After 2014 the first-generation cars began to be built under the license in China. They were known as the Volvo XC Classic.
