Volkswagen Crafter
Volkswagen Crafter is a commercial vehicle produced from 2006 till nowadays. By loading capacity it is the biggest light commercial vehicle that was only released by the company.
This car is manufactured at the German plants in Ludwigsfeld and Düsseldorf.
Volkswagen Crafter І generation
Volkswagen Crafter actually replaced the predecessor in the class - Volkswagen LT manufactured since 1975. In 2006 developers released the limited Volkswagen Crafter Atacama Concept series that had the "the van of cross-country capacity" or "ORV van" status. It was presented at the auto show in Wolfsburg, Germany.
The design of the exterior of the car was developed by the French designer Lauren Boyle. The front part of the body was created in style of the large popular Volkswagen Constellation truck.
The car was released in the following bodies: van, minibus, kombo minibus, 2-and 4-door chassis, 2-and 4-door drop-side truck. Thus, the concern positioned model as the multipurpose car intended for transportation of passengers and loads.
Volkswagen Crafter cars also had three wheel bases of different length. Besides, developers provided three levels of height of the roof.
Engineers released only diesel modifications of the model equipped with turbochargers, Common Rail fuel systems, piezo-electric injectors and particulate filters. Thus, all modifications met the European Euro IV environmental standards, concerning emission of a carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere, completely.
All modifications were completed with anti-lock brake system (ABS), system of electronic stability program (ESP), the electronic differential lock, the anti-slip regulation (ASR). As a standard feature, front airbags were installed on the car, but two couples of side airbags were installed as an option.
Also buyers could have the humidity sensor, heating of a windshield and seats, an anti-theft system, the parking assistant and traffic jam assistant, system of navigation, a tachometer, a cruise control system and the rear-view camera as additional options.
The car had a number of awards and titles from the international automobile magazines:
- "The minibus of year" and "The large minibus of year" from "What Van?" in 2006;
- "The large minibus of year" from "Professional Van and Light Truck Magazine" in 2007;
- "The best van of year" from "Van Fleet World" in 2007;
- "The large minibus of year" from "Delivery Magazine" in 2007;
- "The best truck of year with a chassis body" from "Professional Van and Light Truck Magazine" in 2008.
Volkswagen Crafter І generation restyling
In 2011 developers have carried out restyling of the Volkswagen Crafter model. The exterior of the front part of a body was changed a little — designers used elements of classical design style of Volkswagen cars. The radiator grille and the rear end were changed. The shape of head and tail lights and position marker lights were also slightly changed.
Engines of all modifications were considerably upgraded. Besides, designers created a higher-powered modification with more powerful engine and four-wheel drive. Creation and testing of modification was conducted in Austria.
