Volkswagen Scirocco
Volkswagen Scirocco is the sports car released from 1974 to 1992. Because of great success of the model, it was decided to resume its production in 2008 and it continues till present.
The name "Scirocco" is a name of the wind in the Mediterranean. The car was created in the city of Osnabruck, Germany, and since 2008 — in the city of Palmela, Portugal.
Volkswagen Scirocco I generation
Volkswagen Company began the development of the new sports car in 1970. The model was intended to replace the popular, but already outdated Volkswagen Karmann Ghia in its class.
Volkswagen Scirocco was based on the A1 platform, just as Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Jetta, but practically each separate detail was done in sports style. The Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro was engaged in creation of the exterior and interior. The car had minimalist exterior: two pairs of round front headlights, rectangular radiator grille, narrow bumpers.
Volkswagen Scirocco I generation restylings
Designers carried out little changes of the body and interior in 1976 and 1978. Within these facelifts, screen wipers were replaced, updated side position lights were installed, the shape of rear-view mirrors was changed.
Designers created also a number of separate packages in which emphasis was placed on colour combinations. For example, Volkswagen Scirocco "Champagne Edition” that was produced only in white colour with black inserts was popular in the USA. The same style remained in the interior also.
Volkswagen Scirocco II generation
The second generation of Volkswagen Scirocco cars was produced in 1981. It was unveiled at the auto show in Geneva. The car received a completely overhauled front part of the body. Instead of double round front headlights, rectangular ones were installed. Also developers changed the shape of the bumper and smoothed out sharp angles.
Engineers developed only petrol modifications. At the same time the quantity of packages was considerably increased. In total, there were more than 15 modifications. Also throughout the history of manufacture of this model, designers would present various limited series of design packages.
In 1992 it was decided to stop the production of the car, replaced it with a new Volkswagen Corrado model within its class.
Volkswagen Scirocco III generation
In 2006 the management of the concern officially declared renewal of manufacture of the Volkswagen Scirocco model. Production of the car began at Volkswagen plant in Portugal.
The new model was unveiled at the automobile show in Geneva in 2008. Together with Volkswagen Golf V, it was based on the PQ35 platform and was cardinally reconstructed.
The stylized headlights in classical design style of the company were installed on the car. The model began to look rather aggressively. Developers provided both petrol, and diesel modifications
Within EuroNCAP crash tests, the car received the maximal five stars, having shown the highest level of safety for the driver and passengers.
In 2008 Volkswagen Scirocco received the "Car of the Year" title from the international magazine "Top Gear".
Volkswagen Scirocco III generation restyling
Designers updated the model a little in 2014. It was officially presented at the automobile festival in Shanghai. Front headlights were emphasized, the radiator grille shape was changed. Nevertheless, principal specifications remained at the former level.
