Volkswagen Tiguan
Volkswagen Tiguan is a crossover produced since 2007 till present.
The name "Tiguan" was formed from merging the German words "Tiger" (tiger) and "Leguan" (iguana). The concern announced a vote in the Auto Bild magazine to help them choose the name of the future model. "Tiguan" won, having received 36% of votes. It is remarkable that earlier in mass media this model was called VW Marrakesh.
Volkswagen Tiguan cars are assembled at plants in Germany, Russia, China and Vietnam.
Volkswagen Tiguan I generation
For the first time the Volkswagen Tiguan model was presented in 2006 at the automobile festival in Los Angeles. In Europe it debuted at the Frankfurt auto show in 2007.
Initially Volkswagen Tiguan was created as a pilot model of a crossover which was supposed to become the basis for future developments. Nevertheless, after creating the prototype and testing it, it was decided to start the serial production of the car.
The model is based on the expanded PQ35 platform. Developers installed the 4MOTION drive and Haldex clutch. Rear seats can be folded, forming extra space for cargo transportation.
For the markets of different countries developers offered various packages of the model. In the USA there were the S, SE and SEL packages. Canadian consumers could choose among four available packages called Trendline, Comfortline, Highline and HighlineSport Package. In Russia designers offered packages of Trend & Fun, Sport & Style and Track & Field. At the same time all of them differed not only in name, but also in functionality.
Six airbags, anti-lock brake system (ABS), electronic stability program (ESP), Isofix fastenings for children's car seats, parallel park assist were included in the basic package regardless of the market.
The Chinese Volkswagen Tiguan model considerably differed from the original. It had relatively powerful engines, a changed exterior and other materials of interior trimming.
In 2007 at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum exhibition in Shanghai, the concern presented hybrid modification of the Volkswagen Tiguan model with a hydrogen combustion cell and lithium - the ion battery.
Volkswagen Tiguan I generation restyling
In July, 2011 developers carried out a minor restyling of the Volkswagen Tiguan model. The shape of front and back lights was modified a little, the radiator grille was made larger. Also, updated bumpers were installed.
Engineers added several more powerful modifications and created an additional package with the biggest number of options available. Also developers upgraded cost-efficient engines, having reduced fuel consumption.
Within EuroNCAP crash tests, the model received the maximum, five stars. Besides, the upgraded engines completely met environmental standards of Euro 5.
Volkswagen Tiguan II generation
At the International automobile exhibition in Frankfurt in 2015, the second generation of the Volkswagen Tiguan model was presented. Developers considerably stylized the front part of the body, having made headlights and radiator grille more expressive.
Besides, engineers made the wheelbase larger and considerably increased the power of engines of all modifications. The car went into stock production in 2016.
