Dust masks & respirators

Dust masks and respirators are personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to protect the wearer from inhaling hazardous substances, such as dust, fumes, and airborne particles.

Dust masks are lightweight and disposable, and they're designed to filter out large particles in the air, such as sawdust and pollen. Respirators, on the other hand, are more heavy-duty and offer greater protection against smaller particles, such as those found in smoke or hazardous chemicals. There are two main types of respirators: air-purifying respirators (APRs) and atmosphere-supplying respirators (ASRs). APRs use filters to purify the air, while ASRs provide clean air from an external source, such as a tank or compressor.

Respirators are classified by the level of protection they provide. In the UK, there are three classes of respirators: FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3. FFP stands for ""filtering facepiece,"" and the number indicates the level of protection. FFP1 offers the lowest level of protection, while FFP3 offers the highest.

The choice of respirator will depend on the level of protection required for the job you're doing. Your employer should conduct a risk assessment and provide you with the appropriate PPE. If you're buying your own respirator, make sure you choose one that is suitable for the hazard you're facing and ensure that it fits properly.

Dust masks are generally disposable and should be discarded after one use, or when they become damaged or soiled. Respirators, on the other hand, can be reused if they are properly maintained and stored. Check the manufacturer's instructions for specific guidance.

Respirators should be cleaned and disinfected after each use and stored in a clean, dry place. Replace any damaged or worn parts, such as filters or valves, and make sure the respirator is fitted properly before each use.
