Installed this on my e92 330i; I would consider this an "upgrade", it most certainly has a higher CFM than the original OEM blower and shifts a lot more air. I now get a gale out of the back air vents with the Ridex part, rather than a mild breeze with the OEM fan (fixed my squealing nicely too but that was obvious). Can't quote to longevity as only installed it 3 days ago.
