Jeep Commander
The midsize five-door Jeep Commander ORV was released to expand the existing model range of the producer represented at that time by only three positions (Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee). It was produced from 2006 to 2010. Assembling was carried out at plants in the USA and Austria (for the Eurasian market).
History of Jeep Commander Creation
The Jeep Commander Concept car for the first time was presented in 1999 at the North American motor show in Detroit. The unveiling of Jeep Commander took place in 2005 at the New York motor show. Stock release of the ORV began in 2006 to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the brand.
Jeep Commander was designed on the platform of new Jeep Grand Cherokee. While developing the exterior of the model, designer Donald A. Renkert adhered to the classical Jeep style: sharp, straight lines of rectangular body, flat panels, vertical windshield. The traditionally chunky radiator grille with seven slots and head optics allowed to recognize the brand of this ORV from a distance.
Jeep Commander was on sale in five-seater and, for the first time in the history of Jeep, seven-seater body. Three rows of seats were located theatre-style, providing excellent visibility. For convenience of passengers of the second and third row, the stepped roof was skillfully masked by luggage railings. Both back rows of seats could be folded to the floor to increase the boot volume if necessary. The spare wheel was placed under the car bottom.
The details of the interior were made of quite rigid plastic and were not adjusted to each other in a proper way, but the level of noise isolation of passenger compartment was on par. Design of the dashboard was partially borrowed from Jeep Grand Cherokee. Four pairs of adjustable vent grills and 16 decorative bolts, used for design of the front panel, made it look monumental. Thanks to laconic design of all devices, all the data was easy to read. Front seats provided high seating; however, they did not have exceptional lateral support.
The basic package of Jeep Commander showed the producers took care of safety of passengers: electronic stability control, traction control system, active rollover prevention system, front two- level and side airbags, tyre pressure control system, immobilizer, central lock with remote control, automatic headlights and the UConnect infotainment system. In the list of additional options, the Command View package drew attention: in addition to the front hatch with the electric drive two more small hatches were located above back rows of seats.
In 2010 production of Jeep Commander was stopped. Its successor was Dodge Durango.
