Mazda 626 was produced from 1978 to 2002 at the plants in Hiroshima, Hofu, Japan, in Bogota, Colombia, Auckland, New Zealand, Wilowvale, Zimbabwe, and in Detroit, the USA. In total more than 4 350 000 cars were produced.
Mazda 626 CB
Production of Mazda 626 began in 1978. The car was developed on the Mazda CB platform and was produced in coupe and sedan bodies. The engine was located in the front part of the body, and the car had rear-wheel drive.
Mazda 626 had good aerodynamic characteristics— the drag coefficient of the model equaled 0,38.
Mazda 626 GC
In September, 1982, the company started production of the second generation of Mazda 626. The car was developed on the Mazda GC platform and was released in five-door hatchback, coupe and sedan bodies.
New Mazda 626 cars differed from cars of the first generation in the front-wheel drive and rear independent suspension. According to the Motor Trend magazine, in 1983 the model was nominated "The Import Car of the Year".

In May, 1987, production of the third generation of Mazda 626 began. The car was created on the Mazda GD platform. The car was produced in five-door hatchback, sedan and coupe bodies.
On the basis of the modernized Mazda GV platform, cars in a five-door station wagon body were released since spring of 1988. For an additional fee, the car was equipped with anti-lock braking system (ABS) and an airbag for the driver.

At the Geneva motor show of 2000, the company presented Mazda 626 MPS concept in a sedan body. The car was meant to become the basis for the sixth generation of Mazda 626, but these plans were not realized by the producer for financial reasons.

Since 1999 the brake force distribution system (EBD) and system of electronic stabilization (DSC) were added to the basic package of Mazda 626 of the fifth generation. Minor changes affected passenger compartment and design of the exterior of the cars in sedan and coupe bodies. In 2000 similar changes happened to station wagons. In 2002 production of the model was stopped.
