Saab 96 is the two-door four-seater sedan which was produced by the Swedish autocompany from 1960 to 1980. 547 221 copies of the car were released during this time. Thanks to this model, the Saab company gained a fame at the international level. Saab 96 became the first model of the Swedish producer imported to Great Britain.

The presentation of the model took place at the press conference in Stockholm on February 17, 1960. The design of the car was developed by Sixten Sason. Exterior of Saab 96 wasn't unique: design of the front part reminded the previous model — Saab 93.The rear part was entirely processed therefore the Saab 96 cars had more capacious baggage compartment and the fuel tank, large rear headlights, big panoramic rear window, and also more spacious back seats.

In 1965 the front part of cars was changed: headlights were integrated into the radiator grille, the hood panel became more flat. In 1969 there was the second restyling of the model as a result of which the radiator grille was changed again, round headlights gave a way to the rectangular one. In 1978 the chromeplated bumpers were replaced by plastic, new exterior mirrors appeared. In addition, the Saab 96 cars had insignificant improvements and innovations by each model year.

Saab 96 is a champion among models of the Swedish Company by the number of years of release. At the same time for all 20 years of production the rounded shape of the body, that motorists liked so much, didn't change.

The Saab 96 cars achieved a great success in high-speed competitions. The pilots won the well-known British RAC Rally (in 1960, 1961, 1962, 1968 and 1971) for five times and twice — rally of Monte Carlo (in 1961 and 1962). In the list of progress of the model there is also more modern date. On August 16, 2011, Saab 96 of 1966 set a new high-speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats autotrack among cars of a basic configuration with an engine volume of 0,75 l. Its speed made 110,113 miles per hour (about 180 km/h). The previous record was won by Honda Z600 in 2008.
