Production of five-door hatchbacks Smart Forfour started in 2004 and is still in process. There are 2 generations of this model. First generation of this car was produced at NedCar factory in Born, the Netherlands. Production of Smart Forfour second-generation takes place in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.

First Smart Forfour generation model was presented on Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003. Serial production started in a year. This model was first fourseater of Smart company. This model differed from two-seaters Smart Fortwo in front engine location.

Design of Smart Forfour was special for this manufacturer. Body construction consisted of safety capsule Tridion (strong steel carcass) and hinged plastic panels. Front part was decorated with double oval lights and originally performed fog lights. Direction indicators were mounted into mirrors. Characteristic feature of Smart Forfour exterior was two-color body: steel carcass and plastic panels were different in color.

Smart Forfour had a comfortable and an ergonomic passenger compartment. Driver seat with good lateral support could be adjusted up/down and lengthway. Seat back tilt could be adjusted. Steering wheel was covered with leather and could be adjusted up/down in expensive configurations. Anti-skid braking system (ABS) with electronic stability system (ESP), two airbags, power front windows (rear ones were hinged) were available in list of basic options. Panoramic roof with curtain, power steering wheel, leather upholstery, light and rain sensors, built-in phone, climate control system were additional options for this model.

Hatchbacks of first generation were produced till 2006.

Second Smart Forfour generation was presented on Paris Motor Show in 2014. Car differed much from its predecessor. Smart Forfour II was built on platform of third Renault Twingo generation. Engine was moved to rear part of car.

Smart Forfour was significantly renewed. Perforated radiator grille, massive bumper and large rhombic lights with LED inserts made car look more respectable. Taillights were integrated into steel carcass. Bright fabric and aluminum-like inserts. Gauges and air outlets were spherical. Color multimedia display appeared on central console. Audio system control buttons were moved to steering wheel. Rear seats could be folded at the level of floor. Front seats were folding too. Second generation of five-door Smart Forfour hatchbacks is produced nowadays.
