Camshaft position sensor for cars: find out more! How to choose, when to change , and how much they cost
A camshaft position sensor is a measurement device that detects the position of the valve timing components in relation to the engine crankshaft. Its readings are used by the engine control unit for managing fuel injection, ignition and valve timing.
Types
By measuring principle:
- Inductive. They have an integrated permanent magnet. The magnetic flux increases when the mark on the camshaft toothed wheel or a special trigger wheel is approaching the sensor; and decreases when it is moving away; as a result, current is induced in the winding. The voltage amplitude of the sensor depends, to a significant degree, on the camshaft speed. This kind of a camshaft position sensor needs two wires for operation.
- Based on the Hall effect. This sensor consists of a microcircuit and a permanent magnet. It measures the magnetic field when the marked tooth is approaching. The microcircuit assesses the received readings. The sensor is connected with 3 wires.
By purpose:
- For petrol engines. Usually they detect the position of the first cylinder piston.
- For diesel engines. They use several reference marks for measuring, which allows the electronic control unit to accurately detect the position of each piston.
Operating tips
In order to ensure long and faultless operation of a camshaft position sensor, it is important to install it correctly. When mounting the new part, always replace its o-ring as it has a limited working lifespan. In addition, the old part is likely to have been deformed due to taking the shape of the surfaces it contacts. So, it won’t be capable of sealing the joint properly. When tightening the bolt, observe the torque specified by the manufacturer. From time to time make sure that the electrical connectors are plugged in tightly, and clean the terminals to prevent them from corrosion.
Keep the engine bay clean. Remove leaks of oil and other service fluids in due time. Check if the cooling system expansion tank contains sufficient amount of coolant, and the whole system works properly. In addition, do not overload the engine.
Malfunction symptoms
If the o-ring of a camshaft position sensor is deteriorated, oil starts leaking from under it. Also, more dirt accumulates in this place. Visual inspection may show a cracked housing, damaged connector, and corroded terminals. Other faults, such as turn-to-turn short circuit and broken winding usually have the same indirect symptoms: an increased fuel consumption, engine power loss, and activation of the “Check Engine” dashboard warning light. The engine may spontaneously shut down right during driving. In some cases specific popping sounds can be heard from the exhaust pipe.
Causes of malfunctions
Loosening of the camshaft position sensor fasteners and their breakage are usually caused by improper tightening of the part during its mounting. This leads to displacement of the part and its incorrect operation. Sometimes the problem is caused by a worn or damaged toothed wheel. Breakdown of inner components of the part can be the result of engine overheating. Corrosion of the connector terminals occurs due to being exposed to moisture and dirt. Loss of the electrical contact may take place if oil or other service fluids get into the connector.
