What is the function of the rear silencer on my Mercedes Benz?

The component, together with other parts of the exhaust system, is essential for directing the flow of hot exhaust gases out of the vehicle. It dampens the sound of the exhaust system by absorbing it or altering the pitch of the sound.

What types of rear silencers are available for Mercedes-Benz vehicles?

By design:

• Resonators. They are factory-installed on most vehicles. The design normally consists of baffles and perforated pipes of different sizes, housed in a metal casing. Sound is absorbed due to repeated changes in the direction of the gases and fluctuations in the exhaust flow.
• Straight-through mufflers. These are mainly installed on sports cars. These components include a perforated pipe, soundproofing material and metal housing. • Aluminised steel. These components are the most common ones and they are inexpensive. However, if the protective coating is damaged, they will begin to corrode. Therefore, how long a product lasts will often depend on the thickness of this coating. As a rule, they can be used for 3–6 years.
• Stainless steel. Expensive, but reliable and durable. These parts can last more than 10 years. They are resistant to extreme heat and moisture.
• Titanium. These components are mostly used for tuning purposes. They are about 40% lighter than steel parts. They produce a sportier sound due to the thin walls. However, titanium products are more expensive.
