Jaguar XK
Release of the sports Jaguar XK was carried out from 1996 to 2014. Two generations of the model and four restylings were presented. Assembling of Jaguar XK was organized in Birmingham, Great Britain. When creating the new model, producers tried to revive the legendary Jaguar XK sports coupe of 1948-1961.
Model X100
The debut of Jaguar XK of the first generation took place in March, 1996, at the Geneva motor show. The model was constructed on the updated Jaguar XJS platform. In the exterior, smooth lines and rounded shapes prevailed. The squat silhouette, sloping front fenders, a wide bonnet with a power bulge and the curved zone line indicated sports character of the car. In the interior leather and wood trimmings were used. In different packages these cars were equipped with the navigation system, cruise control, the ABS system, xenon headlights with automatic adjustment, seats with electric adjustment and shape memory effect.
Initially the car was released in a coupe body. In April, 1996, at the motor show in New York Jaguar XK8 cabriolet was presented. In 1998 there was a more powerful modification - Jaguar XKR.
In 2000, to celebrate the brand’s return to F1, a limited Jaguar XKR Silverstone Edition series was released. The body of these cars was painted in rich silvery colour, and the passenger compartment was trimmed by red leather.
Model X100 restylings
Jaguar XK X100 cars underwent restyling twice — in 2002 and 2004. Minor changes concerned design of headlights, the radiator grille, and wheel disks. Tail lights got chrome trimming. Technical characteristics were improved. Manufacture of these cars was carried out till 2006.
Model X150
In 2005 at the motor show in Frankfurt the official premiere of the updated Jaguar XK coupe took place. In 2006 at the motor show in Detroit Jaguar XK cabriolet was shown. The stock production of cars of the second generation started in 2006.
The design of cars was borrowed from the Jaguar Advanced Lighweight Coupe concept car shown within the North American motor show in 2005. The chief designer of the company Ian Callum was engaged in development of an exterior. The design of new cars became more reserved and toned-down. Due to use of aluminium panels, the weight of cars was reduced by 140 kilograms, at the same time the body stiffness was increased by 31%.
The passenger compartment was all about comfort and ergonomics. A digital colour display was located in the centre of the dashboard, featuring cruise control indicators, tyre pressure sensors, current gear and navigation system messages. Another touch display was located on the central console. It allowed to control navigation, audio system, climate control and phone. Leather, wood and inserts made of metal and carbon were used in the inner trimming.
Model X150 restylings
The first restyling of Jaguar XK of the second generation was carried out in 2009. The main changes concerned design of the front part: the radiator grille was updated; air inlets had chrome trimming. These cars were produced till 2013. The second restyling of cars was carried out in 2011. The car had big acute-angled headlights and new air inlets.
