Production of Mercedes-Benz CLS Class began in 2004 and does not stop till present. It is a four-seater sedan positioned as a four-door coupe to emphasize the exterior and characteristics which are close to sport modifications. Production of a car is organized in Sindelfingen, Germany and in Mexico.

The concept of the car was presented in 2003 at the auto show in Frankfurt. Release of the first generation was organized from 2004 to 2010. The car was constructed on the basis of Mercedes-Benz E class of the third generation. From the moment of creation, these cars were positioned as the competitor of BMW 6-Series. The model was produced in a sedan body.

The car combined a set of innovative technical features of that time. For example, the powerful system of external lighting by halogen lamps was completed with the Headlamp Assist function switching headlights on and off automatically when the car drives on the underground parking or in a tunnel.

Also the air suspension with three modes of setup - "Comfort" by default, "Sport" and "Sport+" - was set on the cars. It increased maneuverability and passability of the car on a low-quality roadbed. The car body can be raised by 7,6 cm by simple settings if necessary.

In 2008 developers carried out restyling of the first generation. The updated Mercedes-Benz CLS Class had the changed radiator grille, LED headlights, stylish exhaust pipes, advanced side mirrors and the improved disks. Minor changes affected an interior.

The second generation debuted in 2010 at the Parisian motor show. Cars were created on the basis of new generation of Mercedes-Benz E class. The new body was developed with use of heavy-duty grades of steel. It is the first car in the world equipped with LED headlights of active type. The Attention Assist watched that the driver has not fallen asleep was included in number of the equipment. The new Pre-Safe system was used. Producers released one more body — the station wagon.

After the restyling which took place in September, 2014, the car had the diamond radiator grille and big air inlets on the front bumper. Glasses of back optics became darker. The improved screen of the on-board computer and an advanced steering wheel became novelties of an interior.
