Saab 9-3Saab 9-3 is the model of the compact cars were being released by the Swedish company from 1998 to 2014. It was presented in bodies of three - and five-door hatchbacks, cabriolet, sedan and five-door station wagon.
Saab 9-3 I generationThe first generation of Saab 9-3 was produced in 1998 on the basis of the second generation of Saab 900. The Saab 9-3 models were based on the GM 2900 platform. Creating the new model, designers tried to improve characteristics of the previous model as much as possible. First of all, a controlability of the car, soft riding and safety were improved. The body of Saab 9-3 was more aerodynamic, than that of Saab 900. There was no plastic spoiler on the rear door to make room for new fastening of licence plate. As for an interior, the new multifunctional four-spoke steering wheel became the main difference from Saab 900. Also the Saab 9-3 models were equipped with the innovative Night Panel system from Saab. At night this system disconnected an illumination of devices completely or partially, leaving visible only the most necessary indicators. Thus excess information didn't distract the driver’s attention.
The first generation of the model was presented by three-door and five-door hatchbacks and a cabriolet. All of them were available in three modifications: S, SE, Aero. In 2000 the five-door Saab 9-3 hatchback passed crash tests of Euro NCAP and received four stars.
In 1999 powerful Saab 9-3 Viggen was released. The name in translation from Swedish means "lightning stroke" and was borrowed from the Saab 37 Viggen plane that focused attention on high-speed qualities of the car. Externally Saab 9-3 Viggen differed from Saab 9-3 in aer dynamic bumpers, a spoiler and mouldings. Two-colour upholstery of interior was a distinctive feature. The release of Saab 9-3 Viggen was stopped in the middle of 2002.
Saab 9-3 II generationThe restyled Saab 9-3 was shown to public at the beginning of 2002 in Detroit at the North American international Motor Show. The main difference from the first generation of the model was the body of the car. It was decided not to produce hatchbacks therefore a new generation of Saab 9-3 was presented by the sedan body only. In 2004 there was a restyled cabriolet, and at the end of 2005 - the five-door station wagon of Saab 9-3 was produced. The new generation of the model was based on the other platform — GM Epsilon platform.
Saab 9-3 II generation restylingIn the summer of 2007 at the Saab festival in the Sweden city of Trollhattan, restyling of the second generation of Saab 9-3 was presented. The front part of the car was changed most of all: a new style was borrowed from the Saab Aero-X concept car, presented the previous year. For the first time LED head lights were used on the Saab cars. The Saab 9-3 models received also a new hood, a rear bumper and rear optics. The assortment of body colours was enlarged. New door panels appeared.
Works on designing the third generation of the model began in 2007, however it wasn't succeeded to finish it: at the end of 2011 the Saab company declared the bankruptcy. Capital assets of the Swedish autocompany were acquired by the National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) company which resumed release of Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan as the limited series in December, 2013. In May, 2014 production of cars stopped because of problems with financing.
