Subaru RexThe manufacture of the Subaru Rex took place from 1972 to 1992. During that period three generations of the model were presented. The assembly of the cars was established in Japan.
Subaru Rex I generationThe first generation of Subaru Rex was produced in 1972-1976. This model was oriented toward the Japanese market but was successfully sold in Europe, South America and Australia. The car was characterized by its laconic design. Flowing body lines and wide power bulge were perfectly combined with each other. The round headlights set in a deep sockets and its original bumper made the car instantly recognizable. The rear mirrors were situated on the bonnet. The wide rear pillars and high beltline limited the driver’s visibility hardly. Low-cost but practical materials such as plastics and artificial leather were used for the interior trim
The body line-up consisted of three and five-door hatchbacks and two and four-door sedans. Commercial vehicles without back seats were known under the name of Subaru Rex Van.
Subaru Rex I generation restylingThe restyling of the first generation took place in 1976. The vehicle was enlarged; its technical equipment was also updated. The design received minor modifications: new headlights, radiator grille and bumper. The hood received a modified power bulge.
The exterior design was slightly updated in 1979. Changes were made to the wheel disks and bumper design. A small spoiler appeared on the front part of the car.
Subaru Rex II generationThe second generation of the Subaru Rex entered production in 1981. These cars were produced until 1986. The updated car considerably differed from its predecessor: the second generation of Subaru Rex received a front-wheel drive and a contemporary design. The body lines became more angular according to the fashion of the time. The rear mirror housings were integrated into the front pillars. A chromium inset has been installed in the lower part of the plastic radiator grille. A three and five-door hatchbacks were available in the cars’ line.
The design of the car was slightly updated in 1984. The main headlights became the rectangular shaped. The radiator grille was updated.
Subaru Rex III generationThe third generation was produced from 1986 to 1992. The technical side of the equipment and the overall design were improved. The specific feature of the exterior became a sloping V-shaped hood and narrow radiator grille. The front bumper with a wide air intake and integrated turn indicators were made of plastic. The cars received more comfortable seats.
The Subaru Rex III design was slightly updated in 1989. The car received a modern look due to the oval headlights, fluid shapes and massive bumper, dyed to match the body color.
The turn signal repeaters became round. The radiator grille was made in the form of a net with small cells.
The manufacture of the Subaru Rex was ended in 1992.
Subaru Rex on other countries’ marketsThe Subaru Reх vehicles were known under the different names. In different years they were sold as Subaru Fiori, Subaru Mini Jumbo, Subaru Sherpa and Yunque GHK.
