Toyota RAV4 is the crossover released since 1994 till present. "RAV4" is an abbreviation which is deciphered as "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive" — the four-wheel drive vehicle for active recreation.

It was the first compact crossover arrived on the markets of Japan, Europe and America.

Toyota RAV4 of the first generation was constructed on the Toyota XA platform. Production started in Japan in 1994. The model received the title "Car of Year 1995" in the Automobile Magazine.

The car was produced in 3-and the 5-door crossover bodies and was manufactured on the shortened and extended wheel base. Initially designers provided exclusively petrol modifications.

In 1997-1998 designers carried out small restyling of the model — the shape of bumpers was changed. Producers added a new body — a cabriolet - that replaced the three-door ORV in America.

Also in 1997 hybrid modification of the crossover was created. It received NiMH battery. The cruising range in completely electric mode made 193 km.

The second generation of Toyota RAV4 was released in 2000. Designers completely changed design of the front part of the body. It had extended head lights, bumper and a hood, new radiator grille was set.

A number of additional options was added: anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic control of stability (ESC), air conditioner, climate control, 6-disk CD player, electric drives of windows and seats. The sports package also had the metal radiator grille, the stylized handles, sports seats. As extra options buyers could order heating of seats, a panoramic transparent roof, system of opening of doors without key.

In 2003 the car was subjected to small face lifting during which developers stylized bumpers.

The third generation of the model was presented at the automobile show in Frankfurt in 2006. Designers deprived an exterior of the car of acute angles, having made lines of a body smoother. Also they changed the shape of front and rear headlights, set the new radiator grille and the updated rear-view mirrors. Designers expanded the number of modifications considerably, having added a number of diesel engines.

After restyling of 2009 Toyota RAV4 XA30 cars had the updated disks, the changed shape of a front bumper and the radiator grille. As new additional options the rear-view camera, the ignition button, satellite navigation were offered.

In 2011 Toyota RAV4 had new headlights.

In 2012 the fourth generation of the crossover was presented at the automobile show in Los Angeles. The design of the updated cars became more stylish. The main emphasis was placed on increase in power and controllability of the car.

Production of the model was organized in Japan, Canada and China.

In 2015 designers carried out restyling of cars of the fourth generation. The front part of a body was changed strongly: headlights were moved on the upper part of the extended bumper. The car began to look more sports and aggressive. Technical characteristics remained at the former level.
