Volvo S40Volvo S40 cars were produced by the Swedish company from 1995 to 2012. In total two generations of the cars and two restylings were presented. The model came out in a sedan body. Manufacture of the vehicles was established in the Netherlands, Belgium, Malaysia, South Africa and China. In 2005 the Volvo S40 took a second place in the "World Car of the Year" competition.
Volvo S40 I generationRelease of first-generation Volvo S40 sedans was carried out in 1995-2000. The official debut of the model took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1995. The car was built on a Mitsubishi Carisma platform and replaced the Volvo 460 sedan. The design of the car was developed under the leadership of Volvo's chief designer Peter Horbury. The car looked modern and stylish: streamlined body, hood with a wedge power bulge, raised rear part and the smooth roof line - all these features marked a new stage in the style of Volvo cars. Cabin was traditionally trimmed with leather. The driver's seat had a large adjustment range. High level of safety was achieved through the special design of a folding frame, the airbag with face protection from splinters, warning system for unfastened seat belt, "smart" head restraints that protect the neck and the head from hitting.
Volvo S40 I generation restylingRestyling of the first-generation cars was held in 2000. The Volvo Company has been collecting feedbacks and preferences of customers for three years. Based on the material, vehicle structure was changed. As a result, technical performance, comfort, safety and design were improved. In the exterior, the main changes touched a radiator grille, front bumper, fog lights, shapes of the front wings, wheel design. The headlights were enlarged. A new center console with a color multifunction display appeared in a cabin. These cars were being produced until 2004.
Volvo S40 II generationThe release of the second-generation Volvo S40 sedans was carried out from 2004 to 2007. Debut of the car took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003. The model was built on the Volvo P1 platform on the basis of which were also created the Ford Focus and Mazda 3. The car has received a modern and stylish design. The body became more streamlined, and a sloping roof with a strongly inclined rear racks smoothly into the trunk lid. There were new bumpers and grille. A distinctive feature of the interior has been a space under the console, which became the hallmark of Volvo cars. There are new options for interior decoration. Many additional options are included as standard.
In 2005, a Volvo S40 won the award for Best New Sport Compact in the Canadian Car of the Year Competition. In the same year the car received the title of South African Car of the Year.
Volvo S40 II generation restylingThe second generation of vehicles underwent the restyling in 2007. The updated cars were mounted with new bi-xenon headlights with cornering light function. Also, the taillights were updated as well as front and rear bumpers. A new Spring Green color was added to the interior trim colors line-up. Those vehicles were produced until 2012.
