Volkswagen Golf 1974–1997
Developers presented the first generation of Volkswagen Golf cars in 1974. The model was positioned as the economic family car and was produced in bodies of 3- and 5-door hatchback and a cabriolet.
The second generation of Volkswagen Golf II appeared in 1983. Developers kept the main lines of the exterior of the car, but changed the shape of the body a little, improving aerodynamics. Also materials of the interior and functionality of the dashboard were considerably improved. In 1990 the Volkswagen Golf crossover appeared.
The third generation of Volkswagen Golf III was presented in 1991. The car received a rounder body and a smoother silhouette. Developers completely remade the nose of the car and made the passenger compartment more spacious. Beside a classical hatchback and a cabriolet, developers also offered a station wagon body.
In 1993 the model received the title "European Car of Year".
Volkswagen Golf IV
The fourth generation of the car debuted in 1997. Volkswagen Golf received an elongated wheelbase, the body became longer and wider. The passenger compartment of the car became even more spacious.
The model was produced in hatchback, cabriolet and station wagon bodies. Hatchback was much more popular than its analogues. Engineers offered buyers the following packages: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline. A special GTI modification was considered as sports and had the turbocharged engine and the changed body shape with the increased down force.
Volkswagen Golf V
Production of the fifth generation of the Volkswagen Golf model started in 2003. Designers expanded the line of available bodies, having presented a minivan. The car began to be manufactured on the updated PQ35 platform and had an updated body. It was produced with usage of new technology so its durability and rigidity increased 80%.
Designers changed the shape of front headlights, radiator grille and bumpers. The common elements of style remained invariable, but the car began look more modern.
Volkswagen Golf VI
The updated Volkswagen Golf model was presented at the Paris automobile festival in 2008. It was created on a significantly changed PQ35 platform.
The renowned designers Walter de Silva and Tomasz Bachorski were engaged in creation of the exterior and interior. Designers smoothed out angles, increased the size of front headlights and replaced the bumper. Beside the standard cabriolet, hatchbacks and station wagon, the line of bodies had a van also.
Technical capabilities of the car did not change drastically. Engineers made sure to include additional systems of fuel injection and air-fuel mixture formation. Also the system of cruise control was considerably updated.
Volkswagen Golf VII
The seventh generation of the Volkswagen Golf model was unveiled at the Paris automobile festival in 2012. The car began to be manufactured on the new MQB platform. Developers increased the car sizes, but, thanks to aluminium alloys, reduced its weight.
