Volkswagen Touran

Volkswagen Touran is a minivan produced since 2003 till present.

The name "Touran" is a combination of the words "Tour" and "Sharan". Production of the car is arranged in Germany, Indonesia and China.

Volkswagen Touran І generation

For the first time the Volkswagen Touran model was presented in 2003 at the Paris motor show. It had the same PQ35 platform as the Volkswagen Golf model, but was much longer. The minivan was presented with standard and long wheel base. The first one had five seats, and the second — seven.

Volkswagen Touran was the first car in its class to have electromechanical system of steering. With its help it was possible to vary force of steering resistance depending on the speed of the car and condition of the paving. It allowed to achieve larger stability on the road and to reduce fuel consumption a little.

Initially developers offered only petrol modifications which completely met all requirements of environmental standard of Euro 4.

Crash tests of the car guaranteed it four of five stars in the rating of safety of the driver and passengers. Nevertheless, after small improvement of safety system in November, 2003, the car received the top mark in the EuroNCAP tests.

In 2005 Volkswagen Touran cars became holder of the "Best Compact Van of the Year" title from the international " What Car?" magazine.

Volkswagen Touran ІІ generation

Developers presented the second generation of the Volkswagen Touran model in 2006 at the Paris automobile festival.

The front part of the body was changed slightly. Bumpers were modernized, the shape of front headlights was emphasized, the new radiator grille was established. Also the shape of wheel arches and wings was changed a little. In the interior, the engineers changed the dashboard and improved upholstery materials.

Designers equipped the car with the new parallel parking assistant. Sensors in the front part and on each side of the car calculated safety of the parking, necessary speed and the angle of rotation of steering wheel. Before parking, the driver would release the steering wheel and adjust only acceleration, and the system would park the car automatically.

Also in 2006 at the automobile festival in Bologna, the concern presented Volkswagen Touran Cross. It had a more powerful engine, 17-inch discs, and a crossover-looking front part of the body.

In 2008 the concern presented hybrid modification of the Volkswagen Touran model. It was meant to celebrate the beginning of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Volkswagen Touran ІІІ generation

In 2010 Volkswagen Touran of the third generation was presented. It had the same MQB platform as Volkswagen Golf VI. Designers installed adaptive xenon front headlights and gave them an angular inclination, changed the shape of bumpers. Aerodynamics of the body was considerably increased, which added stability to the car when driving at high speeds.

Also adaptive suspension and advanced parking system - both parallel and bay - were now installed on the car. Besides, the model received the BlueMotion system, a special Volkswagen technology that was meant to reduce fuel consumption.

The Chinese Volkswagen Tourans differed from the original a little. The European cars had better electronic system and higher quality materials were used in the interior.
