Learn more about Ball joint - operation method, diagnosis, causes of faults and replacement intervals.

Suspension ball joint is used to connect the wheel hub and suspension arm. Its function is to provide the ability to rotate the hub, while maintaining the position of the wheel in the horizontal plane.

Types of suspension ball joints

By type of construction, on which the part is set:

  • Swivel. Compression element, so is usually installed in the upper part of suspension on the front-wheel cars.
  • Bearing. Tension element, installed in the lower part of the suspension.

By the construction:

  • Assembled. The joint is fastened by bolts to the lever. At fault the element can be replaced, disassembling the unit.
  • Sealed. Molded structure, in case of failure is replaced completely. It costs more than the assembled option.
The construction of the suspension ball joint

The most common design of the sealed part consists of a housing with a spherical hole, and a stud with a ball at one end and threaded on the other. On the stud there is an attached boot that does not allow penetration of dirt and foreign objects. In most cases the assembly is made of steel and the contact surfaces are covered with polymer material. Spherical shape hole is filled with grease to reduce wear and tear of parts.

Tips for operating suspension ball joint

It is necessary to monitor the integrity of the seals. The presence of fractures lead to the penetration of dirt, sand and water into the system and its rapid deterioration.

Damaged seals should be changed immediately.

It is recommended to drive carefully on the roads of poor quality. If possible, they should be avoided.

The average life of the ball joint is 15-120 thousand kilometers.

Faults of suspension ball joints
  • corrosion;
  • wear and tear;
  • mechanical damage or crashing of the ball end out of the body structure;
  • free play.
Symptoms of suspension ball joints failure
  • the presence of extraneous sounds in the suspension when driving over bumps;
  • creak when turning the steering wheel;
  • uneven tire wear;
  • rotating the steering wheel requires greater effort;
  • unstable motion in a straight trajectory.
Causes of suspension ball joint faults
  • vehicle operation on roads with poor quality surface;
  • aggressive driving style;
  • damage to the boot;
  • use of substandard parts.
Replacing the suspension ball joint

Repair of the part is carried out in rare cases. Restoration of the joint is cheaper than replacement, but in this case it is not recommended to economize. This may cause an accident.

Replacing the suspension ball joint requires special equipment and experience therefore it is advised to contact the service center on these issues.
