Release of Fiat Tipo was organized in Europe from 1989 to 1995. In Brazil this model was produced till 2000. Fiat Tipo cars were assembled in Cassino, Italy and Betin, Brazil. Thanks to a new platform, a galvanized body and capacious passenger compartment, Fiat Tipo won recognition in Europe and beyond its bounds. In 1989 the model received the "European Car of Year" award and by sales in Brazil was ahead of the Volkswagen Gol car that took leader positions within twenty years.

Release of cars of the first generation was carried out from 1989 to 1993. The design of Fiat Tipo was developed by the known studio IDEA. The car was modern and functional: smooth lines of a body and an optimum angle of an inclination of a windshield promoted excellent aerodynamics, and the big area of a glazing provided good visibility.

The richest package — DGT — included four-channel ABS, front power windows, the central lock, the digital dashboard with a tachometer, halogen headlights, heating of a rear screen, headlights electric cleaners, the LCD display with LED illumination, cast disks and a lot of other options. In an inner trimming velour was used. The lower part of bumpers was painted in a body colour.

In the beginning Fiat Tipo was offered only in a five-door hatchback body. The three-door hatchback appeared later — in 1993.

Distinctive feature of this model was galvanization of a body: the galvanized area made up to 70% of all the surface of the car. Cubic body style allowed to make the compartment spacious without losing small dimensions of the car, increasing thereby the level of comfort of back passengers.

In 1993 cars were a little modernized. Changes concerned safety: there was an additional driver airbag, the bearing engine frame was strengthened, and doors were strengthened by reinforcing ribs. Bumpers were paint in a body colour, the radiator grille was designed in a new way.

When Fiat Tipo production was ceased in Italy, it was decided to arrange the release of model in Brazil where this car was in great demand. But the reputation of a hatchback was damaged by several registered cases of ignition, and in 1997 the production of Fiat Tipo in Brazil was stopped.

From 1993 to 2000 this car was produced in Turkey. The Turkish models equipped with the digital or standard dashboard was presented in a body of a five-door hatchback. In total at Tofas plant about 50 000 units of Fiat Tipo that were on sale under the name Tofaş Tipo, were released.

In October, 2015 the Italian concern presented the new car under the Fiat Tipo name. It was an absolutely new model constructed on the Fiat 500X platform. In Turkey it will be on sale under the name Ægea whereas Fiat Tipo is an export name. At first it is planned to release a sedan then the station wagon and a five-door hatchback.
