Production of the five-door Hyundai Atos hatchbacks began in 1997 and continued till 2014. During this time, two generations and one restyling of the model were presented in the market. Cars were manufactured in India, Pakistan, Malaysia.

Hyundai Atos was presented in the market of South Korea in 1997, in the European market its presentation took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Length of a compact hatchback was 3 495 mm. Excellent visibility was provided due to high seating and big side and panoramic windows.

The volume of the baggage compartment made 263 liters, but it could be increased to 1 084 liters if seats of a back row were folded. The trunk was opened by means of the lever which was located near the driver's seat, or a key from outside. The interior was very comfortable: there were a lot of niches for storage of personal things, there were deepenings on the each side of the steering column, under a front passenger seat there was a drawer, and instead of a glove box the open shelf was established.

Production of cars of the first generation came to the end in 2000.

In 2000 there was a restyling of Hyundai Atos as a result of which the exterior was considerably changed. The rear part of the car became inclined, and the front part was decorated by a new radiator grill. Developers transferred tail lights from the top part of the trunk lid to the low part. Over the cap there was the spoiler with a stoplight. ABS system, climate control system, hatch were extra options. In the restyled car the sound insulation was considerably improved. The improved car had a new name — Hyundai Atos Prime.

In 2003 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Hyundai Atos Prime of the second generation was presented. The restyled front part which was decorated by new headlights, a radiator grill and a bumper became the distinctive feature of the exterior. In an interior, new materials of finishing were used. The producer presented the Hyundai Atos cars in two modifications: ActiveVision and DymanicVision. Production of cars in the majority of the countries ended in 2007, but at the plant in India they were manufactured till 2014.

In Great Britain Hyundai Atos was on sale under the name Hyundai Amica. In Mexico this car was known as Dodge Atos. India sold it as Hyundai Santro Xing, and in Malaysia — as Inokom Atos. Kia Visto was the Hyundai Atos twin car also.
