Iveco is an Italian enterprise producing commercial, fire-fighting and military vehicles. Also the company designs and manufactures diesel engines. The brand was created in 1975 as a result of merger of 5 companies: the Italian companies Fiat Commercial Vehicles, Officine Meccaniche, Lancia Special Vehicles, the French company Unic and the German company Magirus-Deutz. Now the firm is a part of CNH Industrial Group. It is located in Turin, and its production facilities are situated in European countries, China, Russia, Argentina, Brazil. Iveco cars are sold in more than 160 countries.
History
During the period between 1975 and 1979 the brand produced 200 basic models and 600 modifications of commercial cars. In 1978 the firm produced its first light-duty vehicle – Daily. It had the body-on-frame design due to which its loading capacity was the largest in its class – 4.7 tons. In 2000 and 2015 the model won victory in the “Van of the Year” competition which is held in Hannover, Germany. In 1980 the manufacturer designed the first turbo-diesel engine for heavy-duty vehicles.
In the 80s of the past century, for the purpose of brand promotion, the company supported Summer Olympic Games in Moscow, Davis Cup, researches of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. In 1984, production of the heavy-duty vehicle TurboStar started, the car became very popular on the European market. About 50,000 car units were sold during 7 years.
In 1990s, Iveco model range was added with the EuroTrakker, EuroStar, EuroCargo and EuroTech models. The latter two were awarded “Truck of the Year” title in 1992 and 1993 respectively. In 2012 a Dutch racer Gerard de Rooy won the Dakar Rally behind the wheel of the Powerstar.
Now the company’s production output is about 150,000 commercial vehicles, and its annual turnover is €10 billion. There are more than 5,000 official service centres and about 2,000 sales points for components for Iveco.
