MG MidgetMG Midget are cars in a roadster body, which were produced from 1961 to 1980. During that period four generations and three restylings of the car were presented. Cars were assembled in Abingdon, England.
MG Midget MkIThe production of the MG Midget first-generation cars took place during 1961 – 1964. The second generation of Austin-Healey Sprite was a basis of the new model. The main differences between these cars were in their interiors and exteriors.
The front of the MG Midget’s body was decorated with a big chrome body kit and wide radiator grille with a nameplate in its center. Thin chrome decorative moldings were decorating the sides of the body lenghwise. The first generation’s distinctive feature was a lack of outer door handles and side windows.
The cabin was equipped with two wide seats, a large steering wheel, dashboard with easily readable dials of main sensors. There was a niche between the seats and the luggage compartment – an additional storage space. The heating system was offered as an option.
MG Midget MkIIThe second generation of MG Midget cars was manufactured since 1964. Their main difference from their predecessor was the presence of outer door handles and small adjustable side windows. Rear shock absorbers were replaced with improved semielliptical ones which provided excelent driving characteristics to the car.
MG Midget MkIIIIn 1966 the third generation of the cars began to be released. They were characterized by a high level of comfort and safety. Developers equiped hydralic system with an extra cylinder for the clutch, reworked the fixation mechanism and impoved hood opening system.
MG Midget, which were created for the American market, had a new dashboard with small dials of main gauges, collapsible steering column, three wiper blades and extra side marker lights.
MG Midget MkIII restylingsAs a result of a restyling, the MG Midget MkIII, released since 1970, were equipped with square-shaped tail lights. The front of the car was decorated with a renewed radiator grille, while body sills were colored black.
In 1972 the Midget MkIII underwent another restyling. The main changes involved the rear wheel arches, which became more round. The developers also installed a new silencer.
In 1974 the MG Midget, oriented to the American market, was restyled. Small rubber bumpers were mounted on the car due to the new US safety law.
MG Midget 1500The release of fourth-generation MG Midget cars began in 1974. The cars, oriented to the American market, were equipped with new bumpers. All the cars had a higher road clearance. The developers updated the square shape of wheel arches to improve the durability of the body. The last 500 cars, created for the domestic market, were released in black body color only.
The production of MG Midget was stopped in 1980.
