Opel Omega
Opel Omega is a model of a business class produced from 1986 to 2003. For years of production two generations of the car and two restylings were presented. Thanks to a wide choice of power units and rich packages, Opel Omega enjoyed popularity at car owners. In 1987 it became "The car of year" in Europe. In Japan this model four times (1986–1989) became the owner of the award “Good Design Awards”. Release of Opel Omega was organized in Germany, Great Britain, and also in Brazil and Thailand.
Opel Omega A
The stock production of the first generation of the model started in 1986 at the plant in Russelsheim, Germany, and was carried out till 1993. Opel Omega A cars were distinguished by their spacious passenger compartment, a roomy boot, comfort level and the big list of options. Adjustable seats and a steering column, the hydraulic power steering, heating of mirrors, the hatch with the electric drive, the on-board computer, system of automatic maintenance of clearance and many other things were among options were.
At choice of buyers, several options of an upholstery of the passenger compartment were offered: fabric, wool, velour or leather. In some packages faux mahogany inserts were used in design of the dashboard and doors.
The model was produced in a sedan and a station wagon bodies. The latter had the Caravan prefix, traditional for Opel.
Opel Omega A restyling
Restyling of Opel Omega of the first generation took place 1990. The design of the nose of the car was changed, bumpers and mirrors were painted in a body colour. The radiator grille became chrome plated. On each side of the car wide mouldings appeared. Tail lights and turn indicators got tinted.
Opel Omega B
The debut of models of the second generation took place in 1994. The exterior of the car became more elegant and more modern — in many respects thanks to streamlined lines of a body and more elaborate optics with xenon headlights. In an inner trim, fabric, leather and wood were used, and in Sport package wooden inserts were replaced with aluminium ones. A sedan and a station wagon were still offered.
Also aerodynamic indicators were considerably improved, anticorrosive durability of the body was increased and systems of active and passive safety were improved.
Opel Omega B restyling
In 1999 there was a restyling of the second generation. The design of the body became more angular. The dashboard also had the angular shape. The changes in passenger compartment were directed to the improvement of ergonomics —control buttons of window regulators and exterior mirrors were located at the door armrest. The updated four-spoke steering wheels were installed.
Opel Omega in the markets of the different countries
The Opel Omega models are known also under other names. For the market of Brazil the first generation of the car was delivered under the name of Chevrolet Omega. In Britain the car was on sale as Vauxhall Carlton and Vauxhall Omega. For the market of the USA the second generation was produced under the name of Cadillac Catera.
