SEAT 124

SEAT 124 cars were produced from 1968 to 1980. Currently there are one generation of this model and two restyled models in the market. The SEAT 124 cars were manufactered in Barcelona and Pamplona, Spain.

SEAT 124 I generation

The premiere of SEAT 124 took place in 1968 at the Barcelona Motor Show. The model was the licensed copy of Fiat 124, manufactured by the Italian concern since 1966. Cars of SEAT 124 were oriented to the middle class. Due to the spacious interior, various modifications, reliability and low cost these cars won a great popularity among the Spanish consumers. In the first eleven months since the beginning of production, about 200 000 copies of SEAT 124 were produced. In a range of bodies there were sedans and five-door station wagons. In 1970-1975, the SEAT 124 Sport sporty coupe was released.

The design of the car differed with a simplicity and practicality. Besides, at the time of release the car looked stylishly and was quite modern. The angular body, a long straight hood and wide wheel arches looked elegantly. The front part of the car was decorated with round headlights and a rectangular radiator grill. Window apertures and headlights had the chromeplated fringing. Also cases of exterior mirrors, bumpers, door handles and moldings were covered with chrome.

SEAT 124 cars had a spacious interior, it was one of the main advantages of this model. Big bucket seats provided a comfortable seating. Door panels were covered with cloth. Luxury modifications have wooden dashboards. Cars of the first generation were being produced untill 1971.

SEAT 124 I generation restyled models

The design of the SEAT 124 cars was constantly renewed. In 1971 a small restyling of the model took place. Rear headlights had a square shape, and front direction indicators became more compact. The radiator grill was changed a little. A new steering wheel was installed in these cars. In 1973 the luxury modification of SEAT 124 LS was released. Velour cloth was used in an interior trimming of these cars, and steering wheel, dashboard, central console and seats were adopted from the SEAT 1430 model. Arrow-shaped turn signals were a distinctive feature of SEAT 124 LS exterior.

In 1975 the second restyling of SEAT 124 cars was released. This time the changes of the model were more profound. The famous designer Giorgetto Giugiaro was engaged in the elaborating of design. The most noticeable changes concerned a design of the front part of the car. Round headlights were replaced by rectangular ones, and the radiator grill, painted in a black color was replaced by the chrome one. The rear headlights were redesigned. The quality of an interior decoration materials was increased, the dashboard and the central console were updated. Seats with head restraints were set in some cars.

SEAT 124 in the markets of different countries

Fiat 124 cars, on the basis of which the SEAT 124 model was constructed, were being manufactured under the license in India, South Korea, Turkey and the USSR where they were called Premier 118NE, Fiat KIA 124, TOFAŞ Murat 124 and VAZ-2101 respectively.
