Info on VW LT model - the right selection of spare parts
Volkswagen LT
Production of Volkswagen LT cars lasted from 1975 to 2006. Two generations of the car were presented during this time. Cars of the first generation underwent several restylings. Assembling was carried out in Hanover, Germany.
Volkswagen LT I generation
The Volkswagen LT model was for the first time presented in Paris in 1975. Production of cars of the first generation continued till 1996. Originally the model was presented in a van body. The car had high loading capacity and at the same time good controllability. The van had a cabover body — the driver's seat was over the front axe, and the engine was located lenthgways between the driver and the passenger. Cars were produced with a low or high roof.
Then designers added such bodies as chassis, lorry and minibus. The admissible fully loaded mass of these cars varied from 2,8 to 3,5 t, which was indicated with a digital index (LT 28, LT 31, LT 35). Originally the Volkswagen LT cars had wheel bases of 2500 mm and 2 950 mm long. Later cars with extended wheelbases began to be produced also (length of 3650 mm).
Volkswagen LT I generation restylings
In 1985 and 1993 there were restylings of the Volkswagen LT model of the first generation. In 1985 round headlights became rectangular. Also safety of the cars was improved. In 1993 changes affected the exterior. Cars got a new radiator grille. Besides, the hydraulic power steering and the headlights corrector began to be included in a basic package. As an additional option, the anti-lock brake system (ABS) was offered.
Volkswagen LT II generation
In 1996 the second generation of Volkswagen LT cars was presented. The model was awarded the prestigious "Best commercial lorry of 1996-1997" award.
The Volkswagen LT model of the second generation, as well as its predecessor, was produced in different bodies. A van, a minibus, a board, a dump truck were released. Length of wheelbase could comprise 3000 mm, 3550 mm or 4025 mm. The admissible fully loaded mass of cars reached from 2,6 to 4,6 t.
The passenger compartment of minibuses of the second generation became much more comfortable both for the driver, and for passengers. Inside the car, soft seats with adjustable backs appeared. Seats of the back row could be dismantled, creating room for transporting bulky cargo. There were ashtrays and pockets for storing small objects on the seatbacks. The ergonomics of the driver's seat was considerably improved.
Changes concerned also the dashboard. Speedometer and tachometer displays, and also of fuel and cooling liquid temperature sensors were located on it. All other information was output by means of control lamps. Cars of the second generation were completed with the hydraulic power steering. Heated seats were included in the extended package.
In 2006 the Volkswagen LT car of the second generation gave way to the Volkswagen Crafter model.
