Screw clamps: what you need to know

Clamps are special tools used for securely fixing the processed parts. They are used when doing such operations as drilling, glueing, welding or sawing parts. Clamps don’t need to be attached to the machine or bench.

What are the types of clamps?

By operating principle:

• Screw clamps. They ensure a high clamping force. However, it takes a lot of time to fix an element to be processed. Depending on the shape and design, these tools fall into:
  • G clamps. They are designed for high loads, however, are unsuitable for fixing very thick items.
  • F clamps. They are characterised by a lower clamping force, and allow to perform works with thick work-pieces.
  • Edge clamps. They allow to attach materials to the edge of the processed part.
  • Angle clamps. They are suitable for joining objects at a right angle.
• Trigger clamps. They are characterised by rapid action, and allow to fix a part using one hand.
• Spring clamps. They are designed for securing small objects, and operate similar to clips.
• Band clamps. They allow to fix parts with several corner grips and a strap around them. These clamps are very useful if you need to fix oval, round, polygonal elements.

By the material:

• Metal. They are the most durable. They ensure the highest clamping force.
• Plastic. They are usually used for junctions that require less clamping force.

Tips on using clamps

Read the instructions carefully before using the tools. When working, it is necessary to follow strictly the recommendations stated there.

The material of the jaws should be softer than the one the part is made of. Therefore, when dealing with fragile items, it is desirable to use jaws with a rubber or plastic coating.

Before you get down to work, make sure that there is no damage on the surface of the clamps. If you’re going to glue something, put waxed paper between the work-piece and the jaw to prevent the adhesive from getting onto the working surface of the equipment.

When the repair is finished, you should clean the device with a dry cloth.

It is recommended to lubricate occasionally the moving parts and threaded components of the tools.
