Ratchet wrenches: what you need to know

Automotive repair often involves the need to deal with fasteners in tight spaces. It isn’t very convenient to use a common spanner in such cases. Ratchets are a good alternative. With their help, you can install or undo nuts, threaded rods, bolts and other fasteners that are located between other components or in recesses.

Operating principle

The tool is equipped with a ratcheting mechanism which allows to undo fasteners without removing and attaching the device again. It comprises a gear with a pawl. This mechanism converts swinging motion into an interrupted motion. In this process, the ratchet head is securely fixed when the spanner is turned into one direction, and rotates when the handle is moved backwards.

What are the types of ratchets?

• The material they are made of. For example, the head is most often made of chromium molybdenum or chromium vanadium steel. Metal, rubber or plastic are used for handles.

• Length. For instance, there are models 150, 200, 250 and 500 mm long.
• The number of teeth of the ratchet gear. It might be 24, 32, 36, 48, 72.
• Features of a ratcheting mechanism. For example, it can be one-way or can have the possibility of reverse movement. Models of the second type are fitted with a switch.

• Flex head. It allows to loosen and tighten fasteners holding the handle at any angle.

Tips on using ratchets

It is allowable to use only properly functioning devices. If there is any damage noticed, the tool must not be used. The device should be compatible with the size of the fastener.

These devices are not intended for applying a high torque. Too big effort might lead to the failure of the tool. When the work is finished, it is recommended to wipe the device with a dry cloth.
