Side mirror for cars: find out more! How to choose, when to change , and how much they cost
Rear-view mirrors give the driver information about what is happening behind the car. This ensures driving safety. Modern cars are equipped with one interior and two side mirrors.
Types of mirrorsBy location:
- outside lateral;
- interior.
According to the geometry of forms:
- panoramic;
- flat.
By way of adjustment:
- manual;
- electrically driven.
By additional features:
- anti-glare;
- high definition.
The part is a mirror glass in the casing affixed on the body or in the car. The ability to adjust the angle of the side mirrors is realized using a hinge mechanism and allows to optimally adjust the mirror for each driver. Adjustment is carried out manually or by electric drive.
Tips for operating mirrors- It is recommended to fold the side mirrors, leaving the car in the parking lot. This will preserve the integrity of the glass.
- Before driving, make sure that the mirrors are adjusted correctly. Adjusting them while moving can distract from driving.
- It is important to remember that the objects in the right mirror appear closer than they actually are.
In the absence of damage items have unlimited service life.
Mirrors faults- damage or clouding of the glass;
- failure of the adjustment hinge mechanism;
- electric drive or electric heating malfunction;
- adjusting cables breakage.
- the mirror does not change position when adjusting;
- drive operates slowly or jerks;
- the mirror is loose;
- the presence of strange sounds in the casing during movement;
- reduced visibility.
- temperature impact;
- failure of the system fuse;
- wiring closure;
- mechanical damage.
The mechanism of mirrors adjustment and heating is rather complicated. Without knowledge and experience in this field making the repairs by yourself is not recommended, especially if the construction contains elements of wiring. In this case, it is advisable to contact a specialist. Replacement of the part is required only in case of overall damage.

FAQ and people ask: Wing mirror
To do this, you need:
- screwdrivers – a flat one and a Phillips one;
- ring spanner set.
See your car’s workshop manual for the exact steps. In addition, the type of the component’s actuator should be taken into account (manual or electric).
Instructions for removing manually adjustable components:
- Remove all clips and the door trim panel.
- Remove the mirror adjustment handle.
- Remove the retainer clip and cables of the regulator.
- Unscrew all mounting screws on the internal side of the door.
- Detach the part.
Instructions for removing power components:
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
- Remove the door card.
- Detach the plastic cover by carefully pressing on the retainers with a flat screwdriver.
- Disconnect the wiring.
- Unscrew the fasteners of the component and its actuating mechanism.
- Detach the part.
When removing the part, hold it tightly to prevent it from falling.
Prepare the following tools:
- a heat gun or hair dryer;
- a flat screwdriver or a plastic pry tool.
Universal instructions for disassembling the part:
- Heat the joint between the glass and the housing with the help of a hair dryer.
- Carefully detach the glass. For doing this, use a small flat screwdriver wrapped with a cloth or a plastic pry tool. Sometimes to remove the part it’s necessary to pull the tabs or press the glass in the centre and move it aside.
- Disconnect the wires if the mirror is heated.
- If the mirror frame has a fastening screw, unscrew it.
- Once you gain access to the adjustment and folding mechanisms, remove them.
Only buy parts recommended by the car manufacturer. Also take into account the following:
- Type of the reflective element. Plane ones provide a perfect image of the road, however, they have a narrow angle of view. Wide angle (spherical and aspherical) ones give a larger field of view but show the objects with a distortion and make them look like they are farther away. The parts of a blind spot type, which combine both types of mirrors, have almost no blind spots.
- Presence of anti-glare coating. To protect the driver from being dazzled at night, the glass has a special coating. Choose components with a light-blue or grey tint.
- Regulator type. A cable-driven one is the most reliable and simple. This kind of mirrors are adjusted from the car cabin using a handle. Power mirrors are more convenient, but due to the structural complexity, their actuation mechanism breaks down more often.
- Additional functions, such as heating, turn indicator repeaters, blind spot sensors, folding controllers, and rain guards. Availability of these options is determined by the trim level of your car.
